UCI players shine

UC Irvine junior Jayson Jablonsky had seven kills and UCI middle

blocker David Smith had two blocks in the United States junior

national men’s volleyball team’s 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 loss to Serbia Montenegro in the seventh-place match of the FIVB U21 world

championship in Visakapatnam, India.

Jablonsky had a team-high 17 points, including 14 kills, in an

earlier loss to Korea. Smith had four blocks for the Americans,

coached by UCI head man John Speraw.

In other men’s volleyball action:

* Jimmy Pelzel, a former UC Irvine Alll-American and the USA team

captain, had nine kills in a 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 loss to Slovakia at

the Summer World University Games.
