Lane signals change
It’s looking like Big Canyon Country Club will bring past Jones Cup
success to the table as this year’s tournament nears.
Director of Golf Bob Lovejoy said Friday he is almost certain
Danny Lane will complete the fivesome that will battle teams from
Newport Beach Country Club, Mesa Verde Country Club and host Santa
Ana Country Club in Newport-Mesa’s premier community golf event at 1
p.m. Aug. 30.
Lane, who teamed with Lovejoy to capture the 2002 Jones Cup crown
under the prior format (better-ball of two partners), will likely
take the place of men’s club champion Mike Carpenter.
Carpenter is scheduled to compete in the Southern California Golf
Association Mid-Amateur championship Aug. 29-30 at North Ranch
Country Club in Westlake Village. Warren Caves, also from Big Canyon,
along with Costa Mesa resident Michael Wanamaker, join Carpenter in
the field for the championship.
Big Canyon’s team also includes ladies champion Martha Redfern,
head professional Clint Whitehill and senior champ Danny Bibb, winner
of a Newport-Mesa record 11 men’s club titles.
A fifth player (a club staff member) was added this year. Scoring
this year will remain the same as last year -- two best balls per
hole per team.
