Sexual assault in Newport Beach

A pregnant woman was sexually assaulted and robbed in the restroom

of a Newport Beach office complex in the 1400 block of Bristol Street

early Tuesday, police said.

Motor officers and a police helicopter searched for the suspect

but were not able to locate him, said Lt. Mike McDermott.

The woman, who has not been identified, told police she was

followed into the restroom and shoved by a man at 9:50 a.m.,

McDermott said.

The man assaulted the woman but stopped when she told him she was

pregnant. He then robbed her, taking her wedding ring and earrings,

and fled on foot.

The woman was found in the restroom, barely coherent, by office

workers. She was transported to Anaheim Memorial Medical Center for a

sexual assault exam, McDermott said.

Police searched for the man based on a vague description given by

the victim. From her description, police believe the man may be a

transient, and they were searching known transient camps near the

Back Bay, McDermott said.

Police find man’s body at his home

Newport Beach police found a man who had been dead for several

days in a condominium near Bayview Way and Jamboree Road Tuesday,

police said.

The man is believed to have accidentally asphyxiated himself,

police said.

The man’s wife, who was out of town, called and asked police to

check on him because she had not heard from him, Newport police said.
