Arraignment today for 3rd murder charge

A Long Beach man, who will stand trial with his wife and another

man on charges that they murdered a Newport Beach couple, is

scheduled to be arraigned today on a third murder charge.

Skylar Deleon, 26, is accused of the murder of John Jarvi, 45, of

Anaheim. Jarvi was found in December 2003 near a highway in Mexico;

his throat was slashed.

Deleon’s wife, Jennifer Henderson-Deleon, 24, and his cousin,

Michael Lewis Jr., 24, of Arizona are also charged in connection with

Jarvi’s murder.

Henderson-Deleon pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that she was

an accessory to the murder.

The Deleons are already in custody awaiting trial for the alleged

murders of Tom and Jackie Hawks, a retired couple who police believe

were killed in November.

Winner of Mayor’s Award named

Eleven-year-old Kenneth Ottens will receive the Costa Mesa Mayor’s

Award at the Sept. 6 City Council meeting. Mayor Allan Mansoor

selected Kenneth to receive the award for his heroic actions in

pulling a drowning girl from the water at a Costa Mesa pool July 24.

Mansoor will present the award at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers

at Costa Mesa City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.

Lifeguards to hold summer blood drive

The Newport Beach Lifeguards will hold their second blood drive of

the summer from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 2 at the lifeguard headquarters

at the base of the Newport Beach pier.

Each year the lifeguards’ blood drive provides more than 100 units

of blood. Because blood cannot be stockpiled, donors are needed on a

regular basis.

Anyone wanting to donate blood should sign up by calling Newport

Fire at (949) 644-3046.

Donors must bring picture identification.
