Head golf professionals Tom Sargent and Mike Reehl, from Mesa Verde

Country Club and Santa Ana Country Club, respectively, headed into

Tuesday’s Jones Cup at Santa Ana Country Club coming off top-five

performances the previous week.

Sargent placed fifth overall by five strokes following a

2-under-par 142 for two rounds of the Southern California PGA’s

Senior Section championship Aug. 24-25 at the PGA of Southern

California Golf Club’s Legends course in Beaumont. Reehl placed sixth

overall and won the 50-54 age division with a 1-under 143 for two

rounds. Sargent finished second in the 55-62 age division.

Reehl tallied two birdies in leading Santa Ana Country Club to a

5-under 67 in the Jones Cup while Sargent tallied one as Mesa Verde

placed third at 6-under.

Chris Veitch, a five-time Santa Ana Country Club men’s club

champion made his first Jones Cup appearance since 2000, when a pair

from each club competed against one another. Fivesomes from each club

used the two best balls in Tuesday’s Jones Cup, won by Big Canyon

Country Club with a 12-under-par 60.

Veitch liked the change.

“This is more fun, he said. “You get a good turnout of members and

the chance to play golf with four quality players.”

Newport Beach resident Don DuBois finished in a three-way tie for

19th in the Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur

championship contested through three rounds at North Ranch Country

Club in Westlake Village Monday and Tuesday.

DuBois, a Big Canyon Country Club member who claimed the 94th

California Amateur championship in June, finished his three rounds at

7-over (78-74-69 -- 221) on North Ranch’s three courses. Robert

Caton, a Pelican Hill Golf Club employee, tied for 22nd at 8-over

(70-76-76 -- 222) in the event.

John McClure of West Los Angeles won the title following a

three-hole aggregate playoff against San Diego State player Joshua

Warthen after both golfers finished regulation at 6-under 208.

Two Newport Beach residents finished in the top 15 in the Southern

California PGA Taylormade-adidas Golf Assistants championship Aug. 8

at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta.

John Ortega shot 3-over-par and tied for 11th in the 36-hole event

(74-73 -- 147) while William Wyman III tied for 14th (72-77 -- 149)

at 5-over on the par-72 layout.

The top three finishers advanced to the PGA of America National

Assistants championship, scheduled Oct. 27-30 at the PGA Golf Club in

Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Chris Gilley of Seal Beach earned medalist honors (66-69 -- 135).

Big Canyon Country Club head professional Clint Whitehill tied for

59th after three rounds (77-72-80 -- 229) at the SCPGA Club

Professional championship Aug. 15-17 at the PGA of Southern

California Golf Club’s Champions course in Beaumont.

Scott Miller of Oak Park shot 7-under (70-72-67 -- 209) to claim

the championship.
