LAGUNA ART MUSEUM

“While Pollock Was Sleeping: Bay Area Abstract Expressionism from

the Blair Collection” runs through Oct. 2.

The Blair Collection provides a rich view of California Abstract

Expressionist painting from 1948 to 1964. The collection includes a

few easily recognizable names, but many of the works in the

exhibition are by lesser known artists who are equally significant to

the “Second Wave” of Abstract Expressionist painting.

“California Art from the Permanent Collection: Part I, The

Beginning, 1832-1925” is the first of three exhibits that focus on

art from the museum’s permanent collection., which holds works

ranging from the early 19th century to present day. This first

exhibit, which runs through Oct. 2, traces art in California from the

earliest paintings, which were mostly descriptive, primitive

landscapes, to the romantic landscapes in Northern California, to the

advent of impressionism in Southern California, and, finally, to the

various modernist movements that followed.

“Surf Culture Redux” is on exhibit through Oct. 5. “Surf Culture

Redux” is a reconfiguration of the iconic works from the museum’s

most well-attended show in its history, “Surf Culture -- The Art

History of Surfing.” “Greetings from Laguna Beach: Our Town in the

Early 1900s,” is on view indefinitely in the Stein-Brief Gallery, is

a reprise of the Museum’s popular 2003 exhibition. The exhibition

features paintings, photographs and memorabilia that exemplify life

in Laguna Beach from circa 1900 to 1930. Artists represented include

(among others) William Wendt, Joseph Kleitsch, Clarence Hinkle, Edgar

Payne and Anna Hills.

Scopelitis is a narrative figure painter. Her vibrant work defies

classification as it is filled with symbols, icons, archetypes and

myths that require contemplation to fully appreciate the visual

vibration on canvas. The compositions typically employ a discernible

foreground, middle ground and background, which invite the viewer

into the dream. She often combines traditional portraiture with

inferences to literature and mythology effectively joining the
