H.B. United wins Labor Day tourney

H.B. United, a South Coast Soccer Club boys’ under-13 team, used a

powerful offensive attack and a staunch defense to win its division

at the Junior United Soccer Assn. Kickoff Tournament.

H.B. United went undefeated during the tournament, which ended

Monday. The defense gave up one goal and the offense scored 19 en

route to the title.

H.B. United wrapped up the championship with an easy 6-0 shutout

of the Stampede in the tournament final.

Trevor Hatchard, the MVP of the tournament, Kyle Macleod, Charlie

Miller, Zack LaCavera, Sean Atwood, Brett Knox, Phillip Weston and

Bajj Chela provided the offensive firepower.

The defense was led by sweeper Brett Bryant, Brett Morinaka,

Patrick Gannon, Alex Barone, Jason Fernandez and Blake Hice.

Cameron McArthur manned the net for H.B. United.

In youth football:

The Mighty Mite Chargers of Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football

launched their 2005 regular season Saturday with a 24-6 victory over

Saddleback Valley.

Robert Rice scored three touchdowns and Seth Fox scored once for

the Chargers, who play at Yorba Linda Saturday.

Jr. Midget Division

Green Chargers 32, La Habra 0

The Jr. Midget Green Chargers opened their season with an

impressive shutout of the La Habra Lions.

Kyle Clay returned an interception for a touchdown, and Johnny

DeValk made each of his four extra point kicks to account for eight

of the Green Chargers points.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Santa Margarita 34, Gold Chargers 7

A touchdown run by Trevor Borkowski in the second half accounted

for the only scoring by the Gold Chargers.

Pee Wee Division

Green Chargers 32, Brea 0

The Green Chargers held the Bengals to just two first downs in

rolling to a season-opening victory.

In youth basketball:

The South Huntington Beach Chargers, a sixth-grade National Junior

Basketball All-Net division team, finished third at the recent Orange

County Summer Jam Tournament.

The Chargers edged Fresno, 42-40, in the tournament’s third-place

game, and finished summer tournament play with a record of 10-3.

They began the tournament by slipping past the Corona Cannons,

59-58. Later they defeated the Irvine Pistons, 42-36.

The Chargers got their third win by beating Santa Ana, 51-40, but

then suffered their first loss of the tournament in falling to the

Irvine Warriors, 47-46, in a semifinal game.

The team is coached by Tim Stephens and Craig Morris. Their player

roster is composed of Colton Stephens, Chad Morris, Kris Wolfe, Tyler

Smith, Zach Bauer, Travis Tucker, Nathan Le, Danny McCarty, Shane

Osaki, Frank Guadagnini and Kevin Koeller.
