Car show is a real classic

An afternoon spent admiring the craftsmanship of a 1935 Ford Coupe or

a collection of 1970s muscle cars is more than a way to revisit the

time when such cars ruled the road -- it is also a way to help the

John Burroughs High School football team.

The John Burroughs High School Arrowhead Club will hold its 18th

annual car show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 25 at Johnny Carson Park

in Burbank as part of its effort to help raise $60,000 needed to

support the team.

There are 185 student athletes on Burroughs High School’s

freshman, junior varsity and varsity football teams this year, who

require transportation to away games, equipment and uniforms.

“We need to raise $60,000 a year to keep the football team active

and strong in playing,” said Jim Etter, the publicity coordinator for

the arrowhead club. “Buses are paid for by these events, and some

kids can’t afford to pay anything for uniforms. The funds from this

event will go into a pool to help the football teams, all levels all

years.”

“It’s a great community day,” head football Coach, Keith Knoop

said. “All the football players and cheerleaders come out and people

get to come check out cars and it helps raise money for the football

team.”

Past car shows have boasted an average of 200 cars, including a

variety of vintage models, muscle cars of the 1950s and 1960s and

antique roadsters, show coordinators said.

“I think that a lot of this is the nostalgia,” Etter said. “They

like to look back and remember the good times when they were in high

school, back when these cars were such a profile in our lifestyle.”

Cars will be judged and given trophies in categories including

best paint, best interior, judge’s choice and best of show.

Burbank’s fire and police departments are also expected to bring

vehicles for public display, including the police department’s

portable command center and a ’59 squad car, show chairmen Donn Nay

said.

Other entertainment will include a live band, Checkered Past, who

will play throughout the day.

Those attending will have the chance to purchase hamburgers, hot

dogs and nachos served by the Burbank Kiwanis’s Club.

“People can come and make a lunch out of it and support the

group,” said Etter.

The event is open and free to the public. Funds will be raised

from food and beverage sales, the $20 a car registration fee for

those who display a car, and raffles held throughout the day.

“You can come and enjoy your love of cars and support Burroughs

high school football and the community,” said Nay.
