Huntington Beach girls’ tennis notches two victories

The Huntington Beach High girls’ tennis team launched its 2005 season

with a 17-1 defeat of visiting Irvine and followed up with a victory

over Gahr.

Junior Stacy Kaufman, playing at No. 1 singles, swept her two

opponents, and senior Florence Poon, subbing for Kaufman, won her

match at No. 1 singles by a 6-2 score.

Sophomore Jennifer Heumann played No. 2 singles and swept, and No.

3 singles Kelly Wong, a senior, won two of three.

It was a clean sweep in doubles play for the Oilers tandems of

junior Christina Le/sophomore Diana Le, senior Jami Perez/sophomore

Kinsey Wood and sophomores Monica Stupaczuk/Lauren Rivera.

The Oilers, playing without Kaufman during Monday’s nonleague

match against visiting Gahr, got sweeps from Heumann -- who played in

place of Kaufman at No. 1 singles -- and from its top doubles team of

Le and Le to defeat the Gladiators, 11-7.

Boys’ water polo

Huntington Beach opened its season at home Monday with a a 10-3

loss to Tustin.

Huntington was playing in its first game under a new coach, Eugene

Char, who took over the program late in the summer.

“This was the first chance I got to see the boys play together,”

Char said. “I came on so late in the summer, and they really didn’t

have any structured summer play or experience.

“I like what I saw against Tustin, though, in terms of intensity.

It was a good learning experience for the boys.”

Two-meter player Andrew Kreitz scored two goals to lead

Huntington.

In other boys’ water polo action, Marina scored an easy 10-0

shutout of visiting Laguna Hills and then dumped Sunny Hills, 16-7,

at the Chris Weisz Memorial TYR Cup.

Chase Parlee scored four goals to lead the Vikings in the win over

Laguna Hills. Parlee, Bryce Madsen, Sean McAlister and Clay Rinker

each scored three goals in the win over Sunny Hills.

Girls’ volleyball

Shannon Hybil had 11 kills as Huntington Beach won on opening

night with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of host Lakewood.

Huntington suffered its first loss in a 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 21-25 setback at Laguna Beach. Hybil had 10 kills for the Oilers.

Ocean View dropped a tough match to Canyon of Anaheim, which

rallied for a 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-6 nonleague home win

over the Seahawks. Kaitlin Potter had 10 kills in the loss.
