Bake sale to benefit hurricane victims

Laguna Beach High School ASB student representative Dylan Doumeng

announced at Tuesday’s board of education meeting that on Wednesday

the school will have a bake sale to raise money for Hurricane Katrina

victims, and another sale will take place Sept. 28.

Back-to-school nights

The Laguna Beach Unified School District schools will be having

back-to-school nights as follows: El Morro Elementary School, 6 p.m.

Sept. 21 for kindergarten through third gradeand 6 p.m. Sept. 22 for

fourth and fifth grades; Top of the World Elementary School, Sept.

22, starting at 6 p.m. for preschool and kindergarten classes, 6:30

p.m. for first and second grades and the Community Learning Center,

and at 7:15 p.m. for fourth, fifth and sixth grades; Thurston Middle

School, 6:45 p.m. Sept. 29. It will be a minimum day at each school

on the day of the event.

Coffee Breaks to start on Wednesday

The Laguna Beach PTA education program, Coffee Break, will

commence for the 2005/2006 school year from 8:15 to 10 a.m.Wednesday at the Surf and Sand Hotel and Resort, 1555 South Coast Highway. The

topic will be “Inside Scoop on the Upcoming Year,” with principals

and administrators on hand.

“Keeping Your Cool When the Kids Are Losing Theirs” will be the

second Coffee Break, from 8:15 to 10 a.m. Oct. 18, featuring Mary

Sheedy Kurcinka, best-selling author of “Raising the Spirited Child.”

“Raising Financially Fit Kids” will be held from 8:15 to 10 a.m.

Marine Mammal Kid’s Club launches

Pacific Marine Mammal Center is getting ready to launch its annual

after-school Kid’s Club program to increase children’s knowledge of

the world of marine mammals and marine life through arts, crafts,

dissections and experiments.

Club members go on field trips, visit with the new patients and

learn about different topics in marine biology.

The club meets one Friday each month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Sept.

23 through May 19, at the marine mammal facility, 20612 Laguna Canyon Road.

Rudy Ruettiger to speak at Thurston

Thurston Middle School will present Rudy Ruettiger -- a University

of Notre Dame football player whose life was the subject of the movie

“Rudy” -- from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 21. Ruettiger speaks to schools

and businesses around the nation about self-confidence and dedication

to goals.

Ruettiger will address all students, followed by meetings with

faculty and staff and two smaller groups of students. Thurston PTA

funded this project. Thurston Middle School is at 2100 Park Ave. For

Girl Scouts will hold a pool party

Laguna Beach Girl Scout leaders will hold a pool party with

swimming, games and snacks to introduce girls and their families to

scouting, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at the high school pool on

Park Avenue. Cost is $4 and includes entrance to pool and snacks. For
