Evening to benefit homeless shelter

The Friendship Shelter, an Orange County adult homeless

rehabilitation program and emergency shelter, is joining forces with

Luther Hughes and the Cannonball/Coltrane Project for “Jazz by the

Sea in Laguna” at the Madison Square & Garden Cafe from 6 to 9 p.m.

Sept. 25.

The evening will include a New Orleans-style menu, hosted wine bar

and silent auction. Tickets are $100 for individuals and $180 per

couple. Proceeds will support the Friendship Shelter’s programs.

Women artists wanted for art boutique

The Women’s Club of Laguna Beach is considering holding a one-day

Winter Art Boutique in mid-November. All types of arts and crafts are

eligible. Women artists wishing to exhibit should contact Nadine

Stone carving workshop begins

Master stone carvers Marvin Johnson and Joseph Sovella will be

teaching a 10-week stone-carving workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday to Nov. 19 at Laguna College of Art and Design, 2222 Laguna

Canyon Road. Sovella has taught at Laguna College since 1986 and

Johnson since 1992. The workshop is $300, with free make-up classes.

Grace Slick art reception

Grace Slick, whose name became synonymous with ‘60s counterculture

through her band Jefferson Airplane, six years ago turned her

creativity to painting and printmaking. She will make a rare public

appearance at the Wentworth Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 23. The

event is free and open to the public. All art is available for

Laguna Beach Live New Orleans-style jazz

Laguna Beach Live presents the New Orleans-style jazz by Gremoli,

the energetic quintet led by Ron Going on clarinet, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sept. 29. Gremoli also includes band members Ted Thomas on cornet,

Jim Leigh on trombone, Mike Fay on bass and Vic Loring on banjo.

Cover charge is $10; wines by the glass and tapas available for

purchase. The group will perform at the Rose Garden of the Hotel

Gallery features artist Fitz Maurice

Brooks Gallery, 3251 Laguna Canyon Road, will be featuring the

works of Fitz Maurice at a grand opening and artist reception from 6

to 9 p.m. Sept. 24. Maurice will be in attendance.

The gallery also exhibits sculpture, custom furniture and rare

pieces.

All-women jazz band to perform Oct. 1 and 2

Laguna Beach Live is presenting Jazz at the Beach Weekend Oct 1

and Oct. 2. featuring saxophonist Ann Patterson and her all-women

17-piece band Maiden Voyage performing jazz at 8 p.m. at Laguna Beach

Artists’ Theater, 625 Park Ave.
