The Newport Harbor High field hockey team remains undefeated

following a 2-0 victory over visiting Bonita Thursday at the Harper

Community Center.

Junior Robin Ibbetson scored early in the second half for the

Sailors (7-0) on an assist from senior Sasha Grumann.

Senior Danica Kalmbach added a security goal late in the second

half.

Newport visits Harvard-Westlake at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Eagles win pair

* VOLLEYBALL: Estancia High’s girls volleyball team won two

matches in pool play at the Poway tournament Thursday evening.

In the early match, Estancia beat San Dimas, 22-25, 25-17, 25-19,

25-13. In the second match, the Eagles beat Chaffey of Ontario,

25-14, 25-17, 22-25, 25-27, 15-10.

Sarah Braunsdorf led Estancia with 29 kills and 21 digs. Jaye

Helmich added seven blocks.

Estancia (5-0) finished first in its pool. The Eagles continue

play in the tournament tonight.

Sage tops Ocean View

* GOLF: Sage Hill School’s girls golf team won a defaulted match

against Ocean View at Meadowlark Country Club Thursday. Justine Chen

was the medalist, shooting 41, while the Lightning shot 232 as a

team.

Natalie Kraft carded 42, while Emma Koh (46), Kimberly Venditozzi

(47) and Madison Gillis (47) also scored for Sage.

Ocean View had two golfers leave the course early after the sixth

hole. Once there were only three golfers for the Seahawks, they were

forced to concede the match.

Sage Hill (2-0) opens league play against St. Margaret’s Monday at

Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Hutton leads Lions

* SOCCER: Junior Heather Hutton scored both goals as the Vanguard

University women’s soccer team defeated visiting La Verne, 2-1,

Thursday. It marked the first loss of the season for the Leopards

(2-1-1).

Hutton scored from 20 yards out 20 minutes into the game off a

pass from Cassie Rodeiro. Four minutes later, right after a Leopard

goal, Hutton took a pass on the right side from Megan Swann and sent

a low shot inside the near post for her sixth goal of the year. The

Lions moved to 5-1, their best start since 1998.

Northwood edges Sage

* TENNIS: Juniors Erica Stivack and Alle Hsu swept their sets at

No. 1 doubles, but the Sage Hill School girls tennis team fell to

visiting Northwood, 10-8, in a nonleague match Thursday at the Balboa

Bay Club Racquet Club.

Stivack and Hsu swept, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, for the Lightning (1-2), who

open play in their own tournament against visiting Westminster at 3

p.m. today at the Balboa Bay Club.

Northwood improves to 2-0.

Doubles -- Stivack-Hsu def. Loria-Yang, 6-4, def. Kurtz-Greenberg,

6-4, def. Wong-Caille, 7-5; Andrews-Carreras (SH) lost, 6-2, 6-1,

7-5; Smrecek-Cummings (SH) lost, 6-2, won, 6-1, lost, 6-1.

Eagles fall to Edison

* GOLF: The Estancia High girls golf team fell to visiting Edison,

212-219, in a nonleague match Thursday on the Mesa Linda course at

Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Carolyn Clements led Estancia (2-1) with a 39 over nine holes,

while Bridgett Gleason shot a 40 and Lina You carded 41.

OCC downed, 4-1

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College’s men’s soccer team fell at

Mount San Antonio College, 4-1, Thursday night. Joel Walker tallied

the lone OCC goal in the eighth minute.

The Pirates tied with Mt. SAC through the first half. In the

second half, the Mounties scored a flurry of three goals in the final

five minutes of the match.

The Pirates’ next game is at home against L.A. Harbor Monday at 4

p.m.

Dailey ranked 17th

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School senior Cat Dailey, a standout

outside hitter on the girls volleyball team, is ranked No. 17 on

prepvolleyball.com’s top 250 volleyball recruits for 2006, according

to the website’s news release sent Thursday.

Dailey is headed to Cal next fall.
