Turning the tide on trash

The Burbank Jaycees is headed to Playa del Rey to participate in the

21st annual California Coastal Cleanup Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

today. Cited by the Guinness Book of World Records as “the largest

garbage collection” in 1993, more than 50,000 volunteers will

congregate to more than 700 cleanup sites to pick up items dumped on

beaches.

This is the second year the Burbank Jaycees will participate.

“As Jaycees, we are committed to helping the communities we serve

and are proud to be part of such a wide scale event,” said Jaycee and

event organizer Dominic Izon. “Last year, in Los Angeles County

alone, volunteers collected over 70,000 pounds of trash.

“Keeping the trash out of our oceans is a serious concern for all

Californians,” he added.

Some of the items found at previous Coastal Cleanups are a

briefcase stuffed with graham crackers, a wedding dress and a pumpkin

filled with cooked eggs. However as the Jaycees point out, although

these items may seem funny, trash in the ocean is no joke. Animals

choke on popped balloons, boat propellers get tangled with plastic

bags, and people can step on sharp objects that wash up on the sand.

Coastal Cleanup Day is coordinated in Los Angeles County by Heal

the Bay in conjunction with the California Coastal Commission and the

Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. Be a part of

the solution. For more information contact Dominic at

BREAKFASTS SUBSIDIZE SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Craving the delicious sweetness of pancakes and syrup? The Burbank

Kiwanis for Fun is preparing for a very busy September and October

with numerous events that will benefit Burbank schools and other

organizations.

The club will be hosting a pancake breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.

today in the parking lot at John Burroughs High School to benefit the

school’s Vocal Music Assn. for its choirs.

In support of the football program, the club will be cooking again

on Sept. 25 during the John Burroughs High School Car Show at Johnny

Carson Park.

A pancake breakfast kicks off the day at 8 a.m. followed by lunch

in the afternoon.

“School programs like the Vocal Music Association and football

program need extra money at some time or another to supplement their

programs,” said club member Isabel Adams. “Pancake breakfasts are a

great way to raise funds for these programs and most people love

pancakes!”

Carrying this theme on into October, the club will serve breakfast

and lunch for the Model T Car Show on Oct. 2 at Johnny Carson Park.

The club will serve its famous pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Oct. 8

in the parking lot of Genio’s Restaurant, 1420 W. Olive Ave., to
