Breakers advance to league title match

The Newport Beach Breakers triumphed, 22-14, over the host Sacramento

Capitals in the semifinals Friday night in the World Team Tennis

championships at the All-State Stadium at Sunrise Mall in Citrus

Heights.

Holding a 17-13 lead, Breakers Ramon Delgado and Devin Bowen’s

victory in men’s doubles in the last set over Travis Perrett and Sam

Warburg sealed the victory.

Ramon Delgado contributed to three wins in the match, winning

men’s singles, 5-2, men’s doubles, 5-1, and teaming with Anastasia

Radionova in mixed doubles for a 5-3 victory.

The Breakers advance to play the New York Sportimes for the league

championship at 3 p.m. today. The match will be broadcast on ESPN 2.

Lions shock APU

* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team upset

No. 5 Azusa Pacific Friday night in Costa Mesa. The Lions won in five

games, 30-8, 27-30, 30-26,17-30, 15-13. Jaclyn Lee led the Lions with

21 kills in the victory. The win improves Vanguard to 13-2 and 1-2 in

the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Newport doubles up

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team defeated Palm

Springs, 12-6, on the road Friday night. The Sailors won all nine

doubles matches. The pairing of Melissa Chinn and Alex McIntosh swept

their matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

Newport Harbor (4-0) returns home against Capo Valley on Tuesday.

UCI wins opener

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team prevailed,

30-20,30-20, 19-30, 30-28 Friday over Eastern Michigan at the Campus

US Credit Union Classic in Gainesville, FL. Lauren Kellerman led UCI

in kills (18) and digs (13). The Anteaters will play the winner of

Florida and Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne.

Sage strong in tourney

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School dominated the opening round of the

Lightning invitational. The Lightning defeated Westminster, 15-3, in

Friday evening’s match. Sage Hill swept doubles, and the starting

singles players won their six matches.

The Lightning invitational will conclude today at Balboa Bay Club.

Sage Hill (2-2) will play Aquinas at 11 a.m. and Santa Ynez at 3 p.m.

Eagles score dozen

* WATER POLO: Estancia High’s boys water polo team exploded Friday

in a 12-2 home victory over Century. The Eagles started strong,

scoring seven goals in the first quarter. Chad Kunert led Estancia

with four goals.

The Eagles (2-0) host Costa Mesa Tuesday.

* WATER POLO: Sage Hill School’s boys water polo team continued

their high scoring attack. The Lighting cruised, 19-5, to a road

victory at Webb. Seven different players scored in the rout. Julian

Tooma led all scorers with five goals.

The Lightning play at Mater Dei Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Edles sweeps Calvary

* TENNIS: Estancia High’s girls tennis team won its second match

of the year in a 10-8 home win. Freshman Ellie Edles won her matches

only losing one game, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. The win evens Estancia’s record

at 2-2. The Eagles host Magnolia High School Monday at 3 p.m.

Sea Kings edged in OT

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High boys water polo lost a

heartbreaking triple-overtime thriller, 9-8, to Foothill Friday

night. Foothill and Corona del Mar entered the match ranked second

and third in Division I. The Sea Kings lost on a golden goal two

minutes into the third overtime period.

CdM was paced by Jacob Murphy and Tom Money with three goals

apiece. Senior Kyle Hersh displayed his flexibility making eight

steals and scoring two goals.

The Sea Kings play Tuesday at Division I top-ranked Long Beach

Wilson.

Orange Coast ties

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team opened

conference play with a 1-1 draw at undefeated Santiago Canyon Friday.

Rachel Ronquillo tallied the sole Pirate score, her first career

goal, late in the first half. The freshman intercepted a pass back to

the Santiago Canyon goalkeeper and converted a wide open goal.

The loss drops Orange Coast to 1-3-3, and 0-1 in conference. The

Pirates travel Tuesday to face defending state champion Cypress.

Sage Hill drops two

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School’s girls volleyball team fell twice

in the Dave Mohs tournament Friday night. The Lightning were downed

by Upland, 18-25, 25-18, 15-11. In the second game, Temescal Canyon

edged Sage Hill in two games 21-25, 20-25. Three Lightning players,

Cat Dailey (16), Haywood Wright (13), and Vista Murphy (10), had

double digits in kills.

Sage Hill plays this morning at 9 a.m. against Laguna Beach at

Newport Harbor High to determine where they will play next in the

round of the tournament.

New league named

* RELEAGUING: The league in which Costa Mesa High and Estancia

will compete beginning the fall of 2006, will be named the Orange

Coast League, Costa Mesa Boys Athletic Director Tim Postiff said.

The newly formed league will also consist of Laguna Beach, Calvary

Chapel and Godinez, a Santa Ana-based school yet to open.

The league name was adopted after a vote of students at each

school.

Costa Mesa and Estancia are competing in the Golden West League

through the spring of 2006.

Cal’s Wahl honored

* SOCCER: UC Berkeley senior defender Tyson Wahl, a Newport Harbor

High product, has been named Pac-10 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

for Sept. 6-12.

Wahl scored the game-winning goal in the 47th minute off a penalty

kick in a 3-0 victory over Vanderbilt Sept. 9, marking the first

game-winner of his career.

Vanguard pair honored

* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard women’s volleyball team continued to

dominate tournament opponents last weekend, going 4-0 in

Pomona-Pitzer’s Pacific Coast Classic to move to 12-1 this season.

VU seniors Keri DeHaas and Marissa Cothran were recognized as

all-tournament picks.
