Do the wave

Finally.

All summer, we waited for a swell to hit that makes it worth

living around here. This weekend, it finally happened.

We’ll look at the swell, which pumped the Wedge past 15 feet and

56th Street way overhead, in a positive light, and not think that

this should be that late-summer swell, when the water warms up one

last time and the Santa Ana winds blow just right.

This summer, we have to take what we can get.

And, yeah, we also know that we ought to be happy that we haven’t

been hit too hard by a storm, as the Gulf Coast has been. But you

realize that surfers on the Gulf side of Florida took advantage of

the waves generated by Katrina before it crashed full into Louisiana

and Mississippi, right? It’s a good reminder that there’s often a

downside to even the happiest news.
