The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will be among the 2005

Character Education Award Honorees when Orange County Supt. William

M. Habermehl presents his State of Education address, titled “A Focus

on Character,” on Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, 17900

Jamboree Road, Irvine.

The Orange Unified School District and 12 children from the

Learning for Life Program will also be honored.

The event lasts from 4 to 6 p.m., and the $50 admission includes

parking and hors d’oeuvres.

A NEW WAY TO THE FREEWAY

An open house will be held Thursday to provide information on a

project to widen Fairview Road at the San Diego Freeway (405) by

adding a new southbound turn lane and widening the southbound 405

onramp. Visitors can view displays of the project and ask questions.

The open house will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the City

Council chambers at Costa Mesa City Hall, 77 Fair Drive. For

KEEP IT SHORT

As part of the Cinema Orange series at the Orange County Museum of

Art, 13 short animated films will be screened at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The lineup includes both computer-generated and hand-drawn films,

two of which won Oscars.

The event is free and will be held at the museum, 850 San Clemente

Dr., Newport Beach. Some of the filmmakers will be in attendance. For
