Sailors’ freshmen romp

The Newport Harbor freshman wanted to make up for last year.

And they did, in a big way.

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors ran wild in a 56-14 thumping of

Corona del Mar’s freshmen Sea Kings. Newport amassed 403 yards in the

game, including 260 on the ground.

Michael Helfrich led the Sailors in rushing with 123 yards on 12

carries.

Despite their rushing prowess, the Sailors went to the air for

three of their first half scores. Quarterback Andrew McDonald

completed all five of his passes to different receivers. Three

completions went for touchdowns.

“It felt to great to come out on top. Last year, we got beat, so

that makes it special for these kids.” said Tar Head Coach Joe Urban.

“The most important thing was all 52 kids got to play.

The Sailors erupted for 22 points late in the second quarter. With

3:45 left in the quarter, JB Green ran untouched for a Sailor score.

After CdM fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Newport converted the field

position with a 13-yard scoring catch from Helfrich. On the next

drive, Newport’s Coby Peterson intercepted the errant throw, and

zig-zagged his way into the end zone right before the end of the

half.

After being down 49-0, Corona del Mar’s offense did come to life

in the second half.

The Sea Kings drove 66 yards for their first score. Trevor Moseley

gained 47 yards on the drive, and John Barrett scored from the one.
