Just nine days to go

So, it’s turned out that for many of the most dedicated political

insiders, the race to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Chris Cox

when he went to the Securities and Exchange Commission just isn’t

interesting enough.

There are people in the community who have seen the endorsements

coming to state Sen. John Campbell (and the money he’s raised) and

who have figured that Campbell -- who so far is two-for-two in county

political races -- has the race sewn up.

So instead of debating the 17 candidates’ strengths and

weaknesses, they are thinking more about who will replace Campbell

once he wins a race that’s still a week from being over -- and then

only on the off chance that in the special primary a single candidate

gets more than 50% of the whole vote.

This may not be a case of the cart way in front of the horse, and

these people may turn out to be right.

But politics, as studied and talked about as it may be, is still

an unpredictable thing. And there are still nine days left for that

to play out. So keep an eye out, even those looking past Oct. 4.
