Sutton’s memory alive in tournament

Outside of his family and coaching, two of Paul Sutton’s greatest

passions were playing golf and helping children.

As a longtime coach and athletic director at Providence High,

Sutton helped thousands of children learn and thrive. Tragically,

Sutton died in 1999 of colon cancer. He was 41.

Although it’s been six years since his death, Sutton’s two

passions are still being fulfilled in the form of the Paul Sutton

Charity Golf Classic.

The sixth annual event will take place Oct. 29 at Tierra Rejada

Golf Club in Moorpark with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the National Childhood Cancer

Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting clinical research on

causes, treatments, cures, education and advocacy for the needs of

infants, children and young adults with cancer.

In the first five years of the tournament, more than $35,000 has

been raised for the cause.

Sutton’s widow, Dana, is chairing the event. The Sutton family --

including Paul and Dana’s children, Alison and Nate, and Paul’s

mother, sister and extended family -- are actively involved in all

stages of planning and organizing the tournament.

This year, Nate will once again play in the tournament..

Reservations are required to play in the tournament, or to join in

the award banquet afterward. Event sponsorship opportunities are also

available, and donations are welcome.
