Contract for Internet Services

The school board unanimously voted, as a consent item, to approve

an agreement for contracted service, not to exceed $10,800, with

Laguna Beach-based Web Wave Resources to provide wide-area network

services and Web and e-mail services from October 2005 to Jan. 31,

2006. Web Wave has successfully provided technical support services

for all the district servers and computer workstations for the past

six years.

What It Means

The approval of the proposal will allow technical support during

the transition period of developing an in-district technology

department. The cost of $10,800 has been included within the 2005-06

budget. Additional expenditures are not expected.

Release of Resident Students for Home Education

The school board unanimously voted, as a consent item, to approve

the release of students to attend the Orange County Department of

Education Community Home Education Program.

What It Means

The release of students to the program would result in an

approximate cost of $5,085 per student, according to the district’s

estimated 2005-06 average daily attendance. Due to the elimination of

state aid at $120 per average daily attendance for a basic school

district, the district is responsible for the cost of educating these

students. There were 20.19 students from the district that attended

community schools for 2004-05 at a cost of $97,211. Possible budget

effects for 2005-06 is $25,423, with five students in the program. An

additional student may join the program, which would add another

$5,085 deficit.

Agreement To Install Climbing Wall at Thurston

The school board unanimously voted, as a consent item, to approve

a contract to install a climbing wall at Thurston Middle Scholl at a

cost not to exceed $6,000. The physical education department at

Thurston requested a grant and received funds from SchoolPower to

construct and install a new climbing wall for physical education

programs.

What It Means

A high-tech climbing wall will be installed according to district

specifications. It will have no budget impact on the district’s

general funds.

Agreement To Approve Vending Machine Contract

The school board unanimously voted, as a consent item, to approve

contracted service with Intelligent Vending LLC to provide vending

machines at Laguna Beach High School and Thurston Middle School. The

district’s high levels of wellness committee will choose the snack

and beverage choices.

What It Means

The district is not restricted to any one name brand or product

and can provide healthy choices. The vending company will donate

support funds of $10,000; the participating schools will receive a

percentage of sales.
