Youngs help CdM handle Breakers

Junior twins and doubles partners Hayley and Miranda Young won 18 of

19 games to help lead Corona del Mar High to an 11-7 Pacific Coast

League girls tennis victory over visiting Laguna Beach Thursday.

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I,

won 7 of 9 doubles sets to top the Breakers, ranked No. 3 in CIF

Division I.

CdM junior No. 1 singles player Michelle Atkins posted what Sea

Kings Coach Brian Ricker called a crucial 7-5 win over Kelly

Ammerman.

Ricker said Laguna Beach was without senior standout Claire

Rietsch, who was on a recruiting visit to SMU.

The Sea Kings improved to 7-1, 3-0 in league, while Laguna Beach

fell to 5-1, 2-1.

Sea Kings dominate

* CROSS COUNTRY: The boys and girls cross country teams from

Corona del Mar High dominated visiting Beckman and University

Thursday in a Pacific Coast League double-dual meet at Bonita Creek

Park.

The CdM girls, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III,

defeated University, 15-48, and earned a 15-50 decision over Beckman.

CdM runners finished first through sixth, the first five all with

an identical time of 19 minutes, 44 seconds over the three-mile

course. They were: Allison Damon, Shelby Buckley, Sarah Cummings,

Nicole Slykhous and Anne St. Geme.

CdM’s Christie St. Geme finished sixth (20:00).

The CdM boys defeated Beckman, 15-48, and University, 15-50.

CdM’s Tommy Hutchison was first in 16:00, while Tim Scott (16:19),

Jack Turner (16:30), Kenneth Wong (16:36), Brian Licoish (16:39) and

Ryan Guthrie (16:43) were second through sixth, respectively, for the

Sea Kings.

The CdM boys and girls are both 2-0 in league.

Eagles untouched

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Estancia High boys cross country team remains

unrivaled in the Golden West League following a victorious showing

over host Orange and Santa Ana in a double-dual league meet Thursday

at Eisenhower Park in Orange.

Estancia defeated Santa Ana, 26-29, and Orange, 15-38.

Senior Ernesto Castaneda led the Eagles (4-0 in league), finishing

second in 17 minutes, 1 second in the 95-degree heat.

Sophomore Hector Gomez finished third in 17:13, while senior C.J.

Buchman (fourth in 17:13.5), freshman Fernando Orozco (eighth in

18:32) and junior Enrique Vivar (ninth in 19:02) followed.

Junior Sydney Barloon (first in 20:51) led the girls, who defeated

Orange, 17-41, and lost to Santa Ana, 26-30.

Sophomore Paula Negrete (third in 21:35), sophomore Magali Onofre

(sixth in 22:39), freshman Sindi Ramirez (eighth in 24:12) and

sophomore Karina Rios (10th in 24:25) also scored for the Eagles (2-2

in league).

Sage running strong

* CROSS COUNTRY: Sage Hill School produced individual and team

winners in the boys and girls six-school Academy League meet Thursday

at Brethren Christian High in Huntington Beach.

Sage Hill Sophomore Katie McKeon, the reigning league champion,

won the girls race to help the Lightning dominate the field. McKeon

completed the three-mile course in 21 minutes, 48 seconds.

Sage sophomore Conor Rose won the boys race (17:24), but the

Lightning needed a tie-breaker to edge Whitney.

Both teams had 37 points, but junior Conrad Whitaker, the sixth

Lightning runner, topped Whitney’s sixth runner by 29 seconds for the

difference.

Sage’s girls totaled 25 points, 19 better than runner-up St.

Margaret’s.

Freshmen Cait Williamson (third in 21:57), Aiyana Bobrownicki

(fourth in 21:57), MacKenzie Muhonen (sixth in 22:16) and senior

Kelsey Rose (11th in 23:14) all scored for the Lightning girls team.

Supporting Rose in the boys race for Sage were junior Tyler Ellis

(seventh in 18:39), sophomore Sean McElroy (eighth in 18:44),

freshman Troy Astorino (10th in 18:48) and Zach Chandy (11th in

19:19).

Eagles down Lions

* TENNIS: The Estancia High girls tennis team defeated host

Westminster High, 13-5, in Golden West League action Thursday.

Heather Morton swept her singles sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, while the

doubles team of Cathy Pittman and Sage O’Toole also swept for the

Eagles (7-2, 4-0 in league).

Sailors sweep doubles

* TENNIS: Britany Cluck and Megan McKay won their three sets to

lead a Newport Harbor High doubles sweep as the Sailors defeated

visiting Laguna Hills, 13-5, Thursday.

Tars shut out Oilers

* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team defeated

Huntington Beach, 2-0, Thursday in Sunset League play at Harper

School.

Sasha Grumann scored in the seventh minute off a penalty corner.

In the 31st minute, Laura Schillings scored for the Tars.

The Sailors improved to 14-2, 2-0 in league.

Monka goal keys VU

* SOCCER: The Vanguard University women’s soccer team beat

visiting Golden State Athletic Conference foe Cal Baptist, 1-0,

Thursday.

The Lions (7-2, 2-0 in conference) broke a scoreless tie in the

72nd minute when Bethany Monka scored on a header. Erika Barlow had

the assist.

VU goalkeepers Marissa Welliver and Kelsey Bowman combined for

five saves and the shutout.
