Lakers sign former Anteater
The Los Angeles Lakers announced the signing of former UC Irvine star
Adam Parada Thursday.
The 7-footer, who averaged 12.3 points per game during his senior
season at UCI in 2003-04, was signed after the Lakers waived Vlade
Divac, a disappointment in his second go-around with the team.
Parada last played for the Huntsville Flight in the NBA
Developmental League.
Lightning top Saints
* WATER POLO: The Sage Hill School boys water polo team edged host
Santa Ana, 11-10, Thursday in nonleague action. Julian Tooma led the
way with four goals and Jordan Cline added three goals for the
Lightning. Danny Harold made four saves in goal for Sage Hill, which
moved to 7-5 this season.
Eagles handle Saints
* TENNIS: The Estancia High girls tennis team defeated visiting
Santa Ana, 16-2, in Sea View League action Thursday. Ellie Edles
swept her three singles sets without dropping a game. Heather Morton
and Sara Stratton also swept for the Eagles (9-2, 6-0 in league). The
Eagles play at Costa Mesa Tuesday.
Sturgess sweeps
* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team beat Foothill
Thursday, 15-3, in a Sea View League match.
Senior Brittany Sturgess won her three sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. In
doubles, the team of Megan McKay and Brittany Cluck won three
matches, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.
The Sailors (8-1, 3-0 in league) face Aliso Niguel on the road
Tuesday.
Sea Kings shut out Pats
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team swept Beckman,
18-0, Thursday in a Pacific Coast League play. Danielle Kaiden didn’t
lose a game sweeping her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in the rout. CdM was
able to rest many of its regulars against the first-year school.
Corona del Mar (8-2, 4-0 in league) will play today against
Calvary Chapel at home in a match that was postponed due to rain.
Kalmbach nets winner
* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team defeated
host Edison, 2-1, in overtime in a Sunset League match Thursday.
Danica Kalmbach scored the game winner after an assist from Robin
Ibbetson 15 seconds into the overtime period. Sienna Palmer scored
the first goal of the match in the second half for the Sailors (17-4,
4-1 in league).
You leads Eagles
* GOLF: Estancia High’s girls golf team defeated Westminster,
194-286, Thursday in a Golden West League match at David L. Baker
golf course.
Lina You led the field with a 34. Caroline Clements and Bridgett
Gleason finished two shots behind the medalist.
Estancia (11-2, 4-0 in league) will have a rematch against
Westminster Tuesday at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
CdM trounces Beckman
* VOLLEYBALL: Junior Julianne Piggott posted a match-high nine
kills to lead the Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team past
visiting Beckman, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23, Thursday in a Pacific Coast
League contest.
Senior Taylor Beauchamp recorded eight digs for CdM (3-8, 3-2 in
league), while junior Kelly Christian added 10 assists.
Sea Kings clip Tesoro
* CROSS COUNTRY: Corona del Mar High’s girls cross country team
outran host Tesoro, 15-50, Thursday in a Pacific Coast league dual.
Annie St. Geme, Shelby Buckley, Sarah Cummings, Allison Damon and
Nicole Slykhous finished at 20:20.
In the boys meet, CdM beat Tesoro, 16-48. Tommy Hutchinson paced
the Sea Kings at 16:37, Kenneth Wong (16:39) , Jack Turner (16:59),
Ryan Guthrie 16:54), and Tim Scott (16:56) all finished ahead of
Tesoro’s team.
The Sea Kings travel to Clovis Saturday for a dual meet.
Mesa girls split
* CROSS COUNTRY: Costa Mesa High’s girls cross country team beat
Orange, 22-33, but fell to Saddleback, 16-35, in a Golden West League
tri meet Thursday. Emily Cotton led the Mustangs (4-1), finishing
fifth in 20 minutes, 8 seconds. Jasmin Day (21:04) and Alyssa Nunez
(21:09) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
In the boys tri meet, Costa Mesa (2-3) lost to Orange, 22-33, and
to Saddleback, 16-35. The Mustang’s top runner, Luis Javier, finished
second in 16:39, Mitch Freeman finished in third at 16:39. Costa Mesa
plays host to Santa Ana Oct. 19.
Aliso beats Tars
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High’s girls golf team fell to Aliso
Niguel, 189-254, Thursday in a Sea View League match at Aliso Viejo
Golf Course. Aliso Niguel had four players shoot less than 38, on the
par-36 course. Iko Kagasoff led the Sailors with a 47. Newport Harbor
(0-9, 0-4 in league) plays Irvine Tuesday at Oak Creek Golf Club.
Sea Kings edged
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team lost a close
Pacific Coast League match to host Northwood Thursday, 213-216.
Jessica Milner led CdM with a 39. Michelle Drucker finished with a
43.
The Sea Kings (7-3, 4-2) will play host to Laguna Beach Tuesday at
Newport Beach Country Club.
OT win for UCI
* WATER POLO: Junior Tim Hutten scored the winning goal with 3:52
remaining in the fourth quarter as seventh-ranked UC Irvine knocked
off No. 5 Pepperdine, 6-5, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
men’s water polo opener for both teams at the Anteater Aquatics
Complex Thursday night.
The Waves’ Jesse Smith had tied the game at 5-5 on a power-play
goal with 4:13 left before Hutten notched his third goal of the game
as the Anteaters held on to defeat Pepperdine for the first time in
three attempts this season.
Hutten led UCI (6-6, 1-0 in the MPSF) with three goals and White
scored two. UCI hosts UC Santa Sunday at noon at the Anteater
Aquatics Complex.
Anteaters prevail
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team defeated host Cal
Poly-San Luis Obispo, 2-1, Thursday in a Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation match. Juniors Anthony Hamilton and Brad Evans scored for
the Anteaters. Goalkeeper Ryan Mathy recorded five saves.
UCI (5-3-2, 2-0) won its fourth straight game. The ‘Eaters play at
Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
Vanguard wins in four
* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team topped
visiting Hope International, 30-21, 32-34, 30-20, 30-23, in a Golden
State Athletic Conference match.
Jennifer Michaelson led the Lions with 20 kills and Jaclyn Lee
added 19. Keri DeHaas made 21 digs in the victory.
The Lions (17-4, 5-4 in conference) visit the Master’s Tuesday.
Niners sweep ‘Eaters
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team fell to
visiting Long Beach State, 30-25, 30-21, 30-21, Thursday in Big West
Conference action.
Trisha White tied a match-high with 12 kills for the Anteaters
(6-10, 0-3 Big West), while Whitney Pavlik added 10 kills.
Erika Chidester and Alexis Crimes posted 12 kills each for Long
Beach (12-4, 2-1).
