Sage Hill comes up big

briefly in sports for ThursdayThe Sage Hill School girls tennis team, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division V, upset visiting Mater Dei, ranked No. 8 in CIF Division I, 9-9 (75-70 in games), Wednesday in a nonleague match.

The Lightning won it in singles, taking seven of nine sets. Sarah Geocaris led the way by sweeping her sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Stephanie Langer and Ashley Adams took two of three singles sets.

Mesa squeezes Orange

* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High’s girls volleyball team won a Golden West League match, 26-24, 25-10, 25-15, against host Orange. Danielle Morton led the defense with 11 digs, and Tracy Bjelland contributed seven kills.

CdM nears record

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team was five shots short of a school record in its 215-242 defeat of Tesoro in a Pacific Coast League matchup Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club. CdM junior medalist Jonna Kim shot 39, while Jessica Milner shot 40, Katie McKitterick 43, Michelle Drucker 46 and Courtney Wright and Kelly Moorhead shot 47.

Sage outshoots Oxford

* GOLF: Sage Hill School’s girls golf team won, 241-266, in an Academy League match over Oxford Academy at Dad Miller Golf Course. Justine Chen led the Lightning (8-2, 3-1 in league), shooting 4-over 39. Emma Koh and Kelsey Venditozzi tied for second at 49.

Eagles sweep Saints

* VOLLEYBALL: Estancia High’s girls volleyball team defeated Santa Ana, 25-22, 28-26, 25-21, in a Golden West League match. Jaye Hellmich had 14 kills for Estancia (11-4, 5-1).

Lions win again

* SOCCER: The Vanguard University men’s soccer team won, 1-0, over visiting Golden State Athletic Conference foe Westmont College as goalie William Johnson had his second consecutive shutout.

Young twins shine

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team beat host San Clemente, 15-3, in a nonleague match. CdM was led by Hailey Young and Miranda Young in doubles.

Sea Kings score 17

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team defeated host Tesoro, 17-9. Jacob Murphy led CdM with seven goals.

Winkler stars for OCC

* VOLLEYBALL: Freshman outside hitter Kiwi Winkler had a match-high 16 kills to lead host Orange Coast to a 30-18, 30-19, 30-21 women’s volleyball win over Saddleback in Orange Empire Conference play.

Pirates sink Hornets

* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team defeated Fullerton, 11-5, in OEC action. Jeanette DeMeneces led OCC with four goals.

Troy edges Sailors

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team fell to host Troy, 11-7, in a nonleague match. Singles players Jill Casserly, Carly Adams and Brittany Sturgess took two of three sets each.

OCC falls in OT

* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team fell to Fullerton, 12-11, in overtime in an OEC game. Kevin Mesnard led OCC with three goals and an assist.
