Dolphins help out storm victims

Local Jr. All-American football teams raise $500 to help those affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.The Huntington Beach Dolphins Jr. All-America Football and Cheer raised $500 toward relief efforts for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the local chapter announced.

Donation buckets were placed at the snack bar and practice fields, with league families generously donating.

Members of the Clinic Division cheer team donated from their own piggy banks, Clinic cheer coach Tracy King-Wenschlag said.

One of the chapter’s football teams donated $80 from a recent garage sale it held, King-Wenschlag said.

The Dolphins’ board of directors matched the money raised during the fundraising effort to bring the total to $500.

King-Wenschlag said that the league presented the money to a local chapter of the American Red Cross on Tuesday during practice at Huntington Beach High.

Dolphins 18, Orange 14

Javier Sanchez scored all three Huntington Beach touchdowns and C.J. Jackson made a game-saving interception at the end of the game to preserve the victory.

Center Shane Martinez, Evan Gray, Drake Williamson, Nathan Matthews, Steele Dubar and Jackson McCleery each had key plays in the game for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will attempt to remain undefeated Saturday when they go on the road to battle the Woodcrest Generals.

Orange 27, Dolphins 0

A strong effort by the Dolphins, including players Alex Alagata, Justin Fallon, Scheyden Herold, Jerritt Rodenas, Nick Rommerdahl, Matthew Tavakoli, Damien Williamson and Brandon Wooten, couldn’t overcome the powerful Chiefs.

Huntington will attempt to get back into the win column Saturday when they host the Fountain Valley Jaguars at 1 p.m. at Huntington Beach High.

Clinic Division

Mona Park 13, Orange Dolphins 6

Huntington Beach put up a valiant effort against undefeated Mona Park, which had to come up with a goal-line stand on the final play of the game to defeat the Orange Dolphins.

Matt Oakley scored the only Huntington touchdown and was headed for a second in the game’s closing seconds.

But he was stopped at the goal line by the Buccaneers.

Danny Maguire, Dustin Stewart and Brad Dominick led a strong Orange Dolphins rushing attack.

Scotty Schultz, Nick Tricario and Grant Lowman led the team in tackling and held the Buccaneers to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Huntington (1-4) travels Saturday to Rowland Heights to take on the Packers in a noon game.
