Chargers golden as a big win propels them to first

Huntington team routs Cypress Crusaders, 28-6; Saddleback Valley Bears are up next. With outstanding play from its offensive line, the Huntington Beach Gold Chargers rolled past the Cypress Crusaders, 28-6, in a battle between two undefeated Pop Warner Football Jr. Pee Wee Division teams.

The victory puts Huntington in first place in the division standings.

The Gold Chargers return to play Saturday to face the Saddleback Valley Bears at 8 a.m. at Edison High.

In other Jr. Pee Wee Division matchups, the Huntington Beach White Chargers defense scored a touchdown and went on to shut out the North Long Beach Panthers, 29-0.

Also, the Huntington Beach Green Chargers were edged by Santa Margarita, 14-13.

Midget Division

Chargers 27, Tustin 6

Stephen Andrew and Luke Gane teamed on a pair of first-down touchdown passes as Huntington bolted past the Tustin Cobras.

The second of the two touchdown passes, set up by an Andrew pass to Jeff Trojan that put the Chargers at the Tustin five-yard line, came in the final five seconds of the first half.

Alek Kirshner took a short pass from Andrew and rambled for a touchdown in the third quarter to add to the Chargers’ lead.

Trojan came up with a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, which Huntington converted into another score when Andrew went into the end zone on a quarterback keep.

Pee Wee Division

Green Chargers 29, Garden Grove 6

The Green Chargers took command from the opening kickoff and never let up in routing the Bulldogs.

Huntington took advantage of an offensive line that opened gaping holes for the running game and bolted to a 29-0 halftime lead.

The Green Chargers defense limited the Bulldogs to just two first downs.

Huntington resumes action Saturday against the North Long Beach Panthers in the final game of the regular season.

Santa Margarita 34, Chargers 0

Host Santa Margarita had too much firepower for the Chargers, who suffered their first loss in six games this season.

Huntington takes on the Tustin Cobras Saturday.
