Tennis team takes two

Laguna Beach High barely breaks a sweat in victories over Calvary Chapel and University.The Laguna Beach High girls’ tennis team steamrolled over two opponents to pick up two more victories in Pacific Coast League play.

The Breakers started with an 18-0 win over visiting University, and on Tuesday they eased past visiting Calvary Chapel, 16-2.

The wins moved Laguna, ranked third in CIF-Southern Section Division I, to 4-1 in league play.

Against Calvary Chapel, three Breakers who normally play doubles earned sweeps in singles action.

Kellie Ammerman began things with a sweep at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 Katie Ochwat and No. 3 Lauren Thigpen followed suit.

Laguna coach Greg Weiss mixed several players into the doubles rotation.

“Those three girls went out and played hard and did what I asked of them in singles,” Weiss said. “They did a great job.”

Laguna begins play today in the Corona del Mar All-American Tournament, which will be held at several sites in Newport Beach.

In girls’ volleyball:

Laguna collected two more victories in league action by sweeping past Calvary Chapel and University.

In Tuesday’s 25-9, 25-19, 25-14 win over Calvary Chapel, junior setter Mychaela Miller came up with six aces, 16 set assists and six digs, and sophomore outside hitter Dana Hutchinson had nine digs.

In beating University, 25-20, 20-10, 25-21, Hutchinson had 12 kills and two assists, Miller had 23 set assists and four digs and Paige Obradovich had seven digs.

Laguna, now 5-1 in league play and 13-4 overall, will play in the Torrey Pines California Challenge, which begins today.

The tournament features squads from Bakersfield, Cathedral/San Diego, Clovis West, Edison, Esperanza, Francis Parker, Immanuel, La Costa, Canyon, Laguna Beach, Long Beach Poly, Long Beach Wilson, Marymount, Mater Dei, Notre Dame Academy, Poway, Rim of the World, Saint Joseph/Lakewood, St. Margaret’s, San Clemente, Santa Fe Christian, Santa Margarita, Scripps Ranch, Stockdale/Bakersfield and host Torrey Pines.

In boys’ cross-country:

Laguna defeated Northwood, 17-38, and University, 16-43, in Pacific Coast League action at Hicks Canyon Trail.

The Breakers claimed four of the top five spots in the three-mile race, with Max Mullender winning with a time of 16:15.

Jeremy Eaton was second at 16:26, Andrew Raub was third at 16:36 and Aman Bhatia finished fourth at 17:03.

In girls’ cross-country:

Northwood defeated Laguna, 20-36, but the Breakers defeated University, 23-35.

Laguna’s Alex Crawley finished ahead of the pack and took first place with a time of 18:45.

In boys’ water polo:

Laguna rolled to a 14-9 league victory over host Tesoro.

Mike Dick led Laguna in scoring with seven goals, followed by Kelan Hurley with three goals and Cameron Brinkman with two.
