COSTA MESA PLANNING COMMISSION WRAP-UP

Here are some items the Planning Commission considered Monday.

CORNER OFFICE SPORTS BAR

Complaints to police about the Corner Office Sports Bar and Grill on Anton Boulevard led the commission to revoke a permit for live entertainment and to change some of the bar’s other operating conditions. Commissioners didn’t go as far as city staff members recommended, however.

In a unanimous vote, the commission took away the bar’s right to offer karaoke, dancing and other live entertainment, and in a split vote, 3-2, commissioners chose to restrict the hours of private parties, forbid events with a door charge, and ban serving of alcohol on patios or other areas outside the restaurant. Commissioners Bill Perkins and Donn Hall dissented in the latter vote.

Staff members recommended changing the bar’s closing time to 11 p.m., but the commission left it at 1 a.m. and will review the situation in 90 days.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Corner Office can no longer offer live entertainment, and the city will keep a close eye on the bar to stem any further complaints.

MELODY LANE REZONING

The commission unanimously agreed to a rezoning of 124 Melody Lane to allow condominiums. Property owner Jon K. Jenkins wanted to change the zoning because as it now stands, just one or two residential units with the same owner could be built on the property.

The new zoning will allow up to four units that could be owned separately.

WHAT IT MEANS

The City Council still must approve the rezoning. If it does, the property owner could build condominiums on the parcel and sell them.
