CdM runners No. 1 in nation

briefly in sports for FridayThe Corona del Mar High girls cross country team was recently ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Nike/Footlocker Super 25 high school poll.

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III, garnered much attention when they finished first at the Clovis invitational Oct. 8, setting a course record at Fresno’s Woodward Park, the same site as the state championships.

Senior Annie St. Geme, who finished second overall in Fresno, headlines the squad, which is also heavily benefiting from sophomore Shelby Buckley this season. Buckley, who transferred from Rosary, is the defending CIF State Division III champion.

Eagles drive past Mesa

* GOLF: Estancia High’s girls golf team won a Golden West League match Thursday, 226-306, over Costa Mesa at Mesa Verde Country Club. Bridgett Gleason led the Eagles with a 3-over-par 38. Caroline Clements contributed a 40. Lauren Cushing (47), Josie Flores (50) and Lauren Donner (51) scored for Estancia (14-2, 7-0 in league), which takes on Huntington Beach Monday at David Baker golf course.

Newport over Irvine

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team won Sea View League match, 27-25, 25-11, 25-22, Thursday at home against Irvine. Bryana Carey led the Sailors with 15 kills. Cassidy Gayner contributed seven digs and six kills. The Sailors (10-6, 4-0 in league) play a league match Tuesday at Laguna Hills.

Sea Kings triumph

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team won Thursday at home, 16-2, over Calvary Chapel in a Pacific Coast League match. The Sea Kings won all nine singles matches. Junior Kelly McKitterick swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Corona del Mar (12-2, 7-0 in league) will play Santa Barbara in the CdM All American tournament at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club today at 11 a.m.
