T-wolves down CdM

Corona del Mar girls volleyball for Wed.CORONA DEL MAR -- Every point was like game point Tuesday night at Corona del Mar High, where the CdM girls volleyball team fell in five to Northwood, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 15-24, 15-17 in a Pacific Coast League match.

In the first game, the Timberwolves remained close, tying it at 10, but CdM took off, maintaining a five point lead throughout the remainder of the game.

In the second game, the Sea Kings (4-11, 14-4 in league) lost their momentum, falling behind, 12-8. A series of unforced errors gave the Timberwolves (12-6, 5-3) a 22-12 lead. The Sea Kings picked up a late 8-2 advantage with kills by Taylor Beauchamp and Kelly Christian, but Northwood took back control, winning 25-19.

“We came out pretty good and got that first game pretty easy,” said Christian. “We had good rally’s where we fought and got the points that mattered, but in the end, they just wanted it more.”

In the third game, Northwood earned an 11-8 advantage, but a series of kills by Tess Hodges, Brook Terry, and blocks by Kasey Kipp and Alexine Rodenhuis, pulled CdM ahead, 16-13. Northwood tied the Sea Kings at 22, but CdM captured the 25-23 victory in front of the deafening crowd.

The Sea Kings fell behind early in the fourth game, trailing Northwood, 19-10. CdM, however, maintained composure on the intensity-filled court in the fifth game after falling behind, 4-7. CdM stayed within two, causing four timeouts in less than five minutes. The defensive effort kicked in as Juliane Piagott and Christian tallied kills, tying the game at 14, but unforced errors handed the Timberwolves the win.

“This game us very exciting for us and the fans,” said Northwood Coach John Gaido. “It got the blood moving. Corona del Mar has a great volleyball program, and they did a good job of frustrating us.”
