UCI’s Cha shines

briefly in sports for Wed.UC Irvine freshman Cha earns medalist honors. Freshman Tim Cha of the UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for medalist honors in The Prestige at PGA West that concluded Tuesday at the Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

Cha and Danny Zimmerman of Illinois tied for first place as there was no playoff. Both shot 2-under 70 in Tuesday’s final round to finish at 3-under 213 for 54 holes. Cha shot 73 and 70 in the first two rounds.

UCLA won the team title with a 4-under total of 860 for three rounds. BYU was second at 870 and UCI finished third at 872 in the 18-team field.

UCI junior Brian Edick finished 20th at 220 (72-75-73), sophomore Garrett Sapp was 28th at 222 (72-75-75), sophomore Derek Uyesaka placed 38th at 224 (74-79-71) and sophomore Kenny Kim was 50th at 227 (76-72-79).

The tournament concluded the fall season for Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters.

Sailors spike Laguna

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team remained undefeated in league, winning a Sea View League match on the road Tuesday, 28-26, 25-20, 25-12, at Laguna Hills. Bryana Carey led the Sailors with 10 kills. Jamie Heennan added nine kills. Coco Yokoyama showed versatility scoring four service aces and converting three kills.

The Sailors (11-6, 5-0 in league) play Thursday at Woodbridge.

Pirates win 10th

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team defeated Riverside, 4-0, in Orange Empire Conference action Tuesday at Orange Coast. The Pirates scored a goal within seven minutes of each half.

Orange Coast got a seventh minute goal by Joel Walker, a former Newport Harbor High standout. Scott Locken ripped a shot from 14 yards out just three minutes after halftime.

Chris Dunckel and Irwin Salas added goals for the Pirates, who improved to 10-4-3 overall and 5-2 in conference action.

Tars blank Oilers

* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team won a Sunset League match Tuesday, 3-0, at Huntington Beach. Sienna Palmer, Danica Kalmbach and Rachel Foster all scored for the Tars. Midfielders Emma Ostercamp and Jackie Taylor both played impressive games.

The Sailors (17-4, 6-1 in league) play Thursday at Marina.

The Newport junior varsity also shut out Huntington Beach, 3-0. Samantha Kuhns scored two goals and Michelle Mossman added a score.

Sea Kings score dozen

* WATER POLO: The Corona de Mar High’s boys water polo team won a nonleague match on the road Tuesday, 12-4, over Sonora. The Sea Kings led 9-0 at the half. Jacob Murphy scored three goals to lead CdM.

The Sea Kings (8-10, 2-0 in league) play a Pacific Coast League match today at University.
