Anteaters tie Highlanders

IRVINE -- UC Irvine’s women’s soccer team played UC Riverside to a 1-1 draw in a Big West Conference match.

UCI struck first in the 28th minute, when freshman Megan Ortiz scored on an assist from Lauren Baer’s throw-in.

The Highlanders tied the score in the 87th minute on a goal by Amber Plumlee.

The Anteaters were outshot, 17-11, in the match. Goalkeeper Tawny Poggio played the entire 110 minutes for UCI, and recorded five saves in the tie.

UCI (4-11-2, 0-4-1 in conference) plays its last home game of the season Sunday.

Cypress 1, Orange Coast 0

COSTA MESA -- Orange Empire Conference-leading Cypress’s Danielle Carty scored the only goal of the match in the 74th minute.

Pirates goalkeeper Lindsay Shook made three saves in the home defeat.

With the loss, OCC falls to 6-6-4 and 6-3-2 in conference. The Pirates play Tuesday at Santa Ana.

MENS’ SOCCER

Santiago Canyon 0

ORANGE -- The Pirates shut out Orange Empire Conference foe Santiago Canyon on the road.

Orange Coast attacked early, scoring both goals in the first eight minutes of the match. Ian Cone scored an unassisted goal in the second minute. In the eighth minute, Ignacio Rivera found David Barnett for the second score.

Orange Coast remains in third place in the conference with the win.

The Pirates (11-4-3) improved their conference record to 6-2.

OCC plays Cypress at home Tuesday.

Santa Ana

SANTA ANA -- The Pirates remained undefeated, beating host Santa Ana in three games, 30-15, 30-24, 30-23, in an Orange Empire Conference match.

Kiwi Winkler, Christina Witt and Brittany Ray shared the team lead with eight kills apiece. Kissa Kent added 12 digs in the victory.

Orange Coast (12-0, 7-0 in conference) faces Cypress Wednesday on the road.

UC Irvine def. UC Davis

DAVIS -- UC Irvine swept the Aggies in a nonconference match in three games, 30-24, 30-22, 30-26.

Amanda Vazquez let the Anteaters with 12 kills and five blocks.

Trisha Wright set the pace for the match with three kills during a 9-1 run that opened the first game of the match.

UCI rallied in the third game from a 22-21 disadvantage to finish off UC Davis.

The Anteaters (8-13) play Tuesday at Cal State Northridge.

WOMENS’ WATER POLO

Battle at the Beach

Tournament

SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team won two games Friday on the first day of the eighth annual TruWest Battle at the Beach tournament, hosted by Long Beach City College and Golden West College.

The Pirates defeated Rio Hondo, 15-2 and also topped Mount San Antonio, 11-7.

The results were good enough to propel Orange Coast into today’s 9 a.m. semifinal. The Pirates will square off against the host Vikings, who upped their record to 22-4 Friday.
