‘Eaters stun Long Beach

college roundup from sundayIRVINE -- Junior Britney Webster and freshman Megan Ortiz scored goals as UC Irvine stunned No. 25 Long Beach State, 2-0, in Big West Conference women’s soccer action before 619 at Anteater Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Webster scored in the 21st minute into an open net after the ball was misplayed in front of the goal. Ortiz scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 64th minute from 20 yards out on the right side with assists credited to Lauren Baer and Makenzie Beahm.

Goalkeeper Liz Ramos had two saves for the 49ers, who fell to 12-4-1 and 3-2 in the Big West. Erin Henry and Rosie Aguilera split halves for UCI, with Henry recording one save and Aguilera four.

UCI, playing its final home match of the season, improved to 5-11-2, 1-4. The Anteaters visit Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. Friday in their last game of the season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2,

Hope International 2

FULLERTON -- The Lions tied the Lancers Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in two overtimes. Vanguard scored the first two goals, but host Hope International rallied with two goals after the intermission.

In the fifth minute, Emelia Miller scored the match’s first goal from midfield with an assist from Megan Swann.

Heather Hutton tallied the second score unassisted into the upper left corner of the net.

The Lions (8-5-2, 3-3-2 in the GSAC) play at San Diego Christian Wednesday.

MENS’ SOCCER

Hope International 0

IRVINE -- Juniors Craig Ettinger, Anthony Hamilton and Brad Evans each scored a goal for UCI (7-4-3), while senior keeper Ryan Mathy had one save and earned his sixth shutout of the season in the Anteaters victory Sunday.

FULLERTON -- The visiting Lions rallied with two goals in the second half to defeat the Lancers in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Mark Babel’s shot was deflected into the net by a Lancers defender for the Lions’ first score.

In the 62nd minute, James Grigas scored the go-ahead goal after a pass from Erick Portillo.

Vanguard (7-7-2, 3-4-1 in the GSAC) plays at San Diego Christian Wednesday.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 14, Pacific 10

STOCKTON -- Junior Tim Hutten scored a career-high seven goals to lead No. 7 UC Irvine past ninth-ranked Pacific in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Sunday.

Hutten scored five of his goals in the first half as UCI built a 9-5 lead at intermission after outscoring the Tigers, 6-2, in the second quarter. Pacific cut the deficit to 9-7 early in the third quarter but that was as close as the Tigers would get.

Seniors Dreason Barry and Nate White, along with junior Cole Bitter, added two goals apiece for the Anteaters, who improved to 11-9 and 2-1 in the MPSF. Matt Turnbull led Pacific (10-8, 0-2) with four goals.
