It’s a clash of the titans in the Sunset League

Edison, Los Alamitos meet Friday in showdown that will give one team the edge in championship race. The Sunset League football race reaches its halfway point Friday, and with it comes the league’s biggest showdown yet.

Although two more league games follow, the winner of Friday’s night’s showdown between Edison and Los Alamitos at Orange Coast College figures to have the upper hand in the chase for the league championship.

The stakes: sole possession of first-place in the league standings.

The superlatives surrounding the game are many: Edison comes in riding a six-game winning streak and is the top-ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division I poll. Los Alamitos is ranked third in the same poll, strolling into the matchup with a 7-0 record. The Griffins are also the defending league champions.

Both squads are coming off impressive shutout victories.

Last Friday, Edison improved to 2-0 in the league and 6-1 overall with a 48-0 rout of Huntington Beach.

The Chargers scored on the first play from scrimmage when Brian Shrock hit receiver Dominique Vinson on a touchdown pass play that covered 59 yards.

Shrock did all of his damage in the game’s opening 24 minutes, completing nine of 10 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns. He exited the game early in the third quarter.

Each of his touchdown passes covered 50 yards or more, and two were taken in by Vinson, who finished with 145 yards receiving.

Devon Bahrami also rushed for three touchdowns for the Chargers.

The 48 points were a season-high for the Edison offense, which has scored 40 or more points three times and has scored no fewer than 24 points in a game since a season-opening 21-13 loss to Kamehameha in Hawaii on Sept. 2.

Shrock did not play in that loss.

Los Alamitos came on strong late to defeat Marina last Friday, 26-0, behind quarterback Ross Hill’s two touchdown passes.

The Griffins have struggled at times in their first two league games. Two weeks ago, Huntington Beach ran all over Los Alamitos in the second half, and the Griffins had to hold on for a 45-35 victory.

Huntington Beach is the lone common opponent for the two teams.

Last year, Los Alamitos upended Edison, 31-24, en route to the league crown.

In other games Friday:

Fountain Valley (3-4, 1-1) vs. Huntington Beach (3-4, 0-2)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

It’s homecoming night for Huntington Beach, and not just any homecoming night: The school is celebrating its centennial this year.

The Oilers have dropped three straight games since starting the year 3-1, most recently losing to Edison last week, 48-0.

Fountain Valley was handed its first league setback by Esperanza last week, 42-20.

The Barons’ four losses are to ranked teams: Newport Harbor, Santa Fe, Santa Margarita and Esperanza.

Fountain Valley has won 11 straight games against the Oilers and lead the series, 25-6-1. Huntington hasn’t beaten the Barons since a 14-10 victory in 1993 capped a four-year Oilers winning streak in the series.

Huntington also won the first two meetings in the series, in 1966 and 1971.

The Oilers have dropped 10 consecutive league games dating back to a 14-10 victory over Esperanza in 2003.

Last year’s score: Barons 28, Oilers 6

Marina (0-7, 0-2) vs. Esperanza (5-2, 1-1)

(at Valencia High, 7 p.m.)

Marina has played well in stretches in games against Newport Harbor, Mission Viejo, Paramount and -- last week -- Los Alamitos, but the Vikings haven’t been able to turn the corner for a victory this season.

Finding a way to score has been tough for the Vikings, who have been shut out in their last four games. Now comes a meeting with an Esperanza team that needs a win to stay alive in the league race. The Aztecs, who routed Fountain Valley last week, 42-20, have averaged 43 points in their last four games.

Last year’s score: Aztecs 35, Vikings 7

Ocean View (2-4-1, 1-2) vs. Costa Mesa (1-7, 1-3)

(at Newport Harbor High, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View put a halt to a nine-game losing streak in Golden West League play last Friday by defeating visiting Estancia, 20-12. With two wins thus far this season, the Seahawks have surpassed last year’s win total.

Junior running back Nhan Nguyen rushed for 184 yards and junior quarterback Brandon Price rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Seahawks in Friday’s win. Costa Mesa put an end to what has been a frustrating season as it used a last-second field goal last Friday to pull out a 23-21 win over league foe Saddleback.

That victory ended a losing streak at seven games for the Mustangs.
