The 2-2 match keeps local team in first place in Coast Soccer League.A 2-2 tie against Cypress Elite Saturday didn’t affect Code Red in the Coast Soccer League standings, as the local girls’ under-14 team maintained its hold on first place.

Code Red struck first when Andrea Ecker found Erika Longoria on the wing and Longoria hit a chip shot for a 1-0 lead. Cypress retaliated with consecutive goals to go up 2-1, and that score stood until the final minute of regulation play.

In that final minute, Ecker was taken down by a Cypress player in the penalty box, and Code Red was awarded a penalty kick. Jodi Hwang took the free kick and sent the ball into the right corner of the net to tie the match.

On Sunday, Code Red defeated Crown City United, 2-1, to advance to the round of 32 in League Cup play. Kelly Mitsumori put the first goal in from 30 yards out, arcing the ball high over the goalkeeper to give Code Red a 1-0 lead. Osiris Ceja was awarded an assist on the play.

Crown City earned a 1-1 tie at the half and threatened to score just after the break, but Hwang single-handedly stopped a breakaway scoring attempt by Crown City.

Code Red’s offense came up with several assaults on goal, but Alli Budd, Rachel Pasternak and Alison Hensley each saw their shots just miss the goal. With eight minutes left in regulation, Lauren Hanson took the ball up the right side and sent a pass to Longoria in the corner. Longoria then crossed the ball to Mitsumori, who scored her second goal.

The defensive efforts of Erica Cabibbo, Rebecca Cruz, Tiffany Van Tress, Ashley Haprov, Breanne Justice and Maylett Roldan shut down Crown City the remainder of the match. Code Red is one of only six Silver teams to advance to the round of 32 in the tournament.
