UCI women tied for ninth

HENDERSON, Nev. -- The UC Irvine women’s golf team was tied for ninth after the first day of the Las Vegas Founders Women’s Collegiate Showdown on Monday.

The Anteaters were a combined 11-over-par 299 at Anthem Country Club, 20 shots behind leader UCLA.

UCI’s Jane Chin and Angela Won (par 72) are tied for 15th.

USC 76, Vanguard 63

LOS ANGELES -- The Lions’ Kelly Schmidt scored a game-high 24 points and Rachel Besse added 22 in a season-opening exhibition game Monday at the USC’s Lyon Center.

CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Empire Conference championships

ORANGE -- Orange Coast College, led by Gaby Santana’s winning time of 19:29 over 5,100 meters, took the first four spots and won the women’s title at Irvine Regional Park on Saturday.

The Pirates finished second in the men’s meet, led by Patrick Fitzgerald’s sixth place finish in 21:53 over 6,450 meters.
