Oilers win league finale
Huntington girls’ tennis holds off Esperanza squad.The Huntington Beach High girls’ tennis team concluded its regular season Monday with a 10-8 defeat of visiting Esperanza in Sunset League action.
Junior Stacy Kaufman, No. 1 singles for the Oilers, and No. 2 Jennifer Heumann, a sophomore, both won two of three. No. 3 Monica Stupaczuk, a sophomore, won one of three.
Junior Christina Le and sophomore Diana Le won two of three at No. 1 singles for Huntington. Senior Jami Perez and sophomore Kinsey Wood, playing at No. 3 doubles, won two of three. Huntington’s No. 2 doubles team, seniors Kelly Wong and Kathy Nguyen, won one of three.
The win capped a 7-3 record in league play for Huntington, which finished second to league champion Los Alamitos. The Oilers are now 11-5 overall.
The Sunset League individual playoffs, which began Wednesday, continue today and Friday with semifinal round action at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.
In cross-country action:
Marina’s Jesse Morrill ran a 15:11 to win the boys’ varsity race Saturday at the Sunset League finals at Huntington Beach Central Park-West.
Morrill, second in the race a year ago to teammate Robert Peck, this time finished ahead of another teammate, Celso Arcos, who finished second at 15:25. Edison senior Jayson Hayes ran a 15:34 and finished fifth overall.
Los Alamitos won the boys’ team title. Edison placed second and Marina third, followed by Fountain Valley, Esperanza and Huntington Beach.
At the girls’ Sunset League finals, Fountain Valley won the team title for the second straight year. The Barons placed ahead of runner-up Edison, Esperanza, Marina, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos.
Fountain Valley’s Crystal Reed won a girls’ race that saw the Barons claim the top three spots. Candace Alai and Hillary Hayes finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, for Edison.
In boys’ water polo:
Marina was edged by Esperanza, 5-4, Huntington fell to Fountain Valley, 12-6, and Los Alamitos downed Edison, 12-9, in a Sunset League tripleheader at El Dorado High.
