Middleschool surfers claim medals

Thurston Wave Riders pick up five at La Jolla Shores competition.In its first Interscholastic Surfing Federation contest of the season, the Thurston Surf Club, known as the Wave Riders, earned five individual medals in stormy conditions Sunday at La Jolla Shores. The team, under the leadership of parent advisor Chris Castro, competed against other middle school teams in the county.

Thurston’s Kris Williams earned a spot in the boys’ shortboard and longboard finals and earned a sixth-place medal in each division. Taylor Pitz and teammate Lexi Ross made their way into the girls’ shortboard final, where Pitz finished in third place and Ross captured sixth. In the girls’ longboard final, Morea Arthur surfed to a sixth-place finish.

The Wave Riders will compete in an Interscholastic Surfing Federation contest Dec. 10 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.

In youth tennis:

The Laguna Beach Breakers 14-and-under advanced tennis team scored a victory over the Anaheim Tennis Center. For the Breakers, Benito Romeo (6-2), Fareed Ahmed (6-3) and Ashley Ta (6-2) picked up victories.

In 12-and-under advanced team action:

Laguna defeated the Claremont Tennis Club by winning seven of nine sets. Natasha Boulad and Ashley Ta both won their singles matches, each by a 6-0 score. Teague Hamilton pulled off a win in his match by a 6-5 score and Erik Henrikson won 6-2. Boulad and Ta, Hamilton and Benito Romeo, and Henrikson and Kendall Cornell won in doubles, each team by a score of 6-2.

In the 12-and-under intermediate section of the match, Kate Rogers, playing at No. 2 singles, won her match, as did Kira Hamilton and Sophia Lavin (6-3) in doubles action, and Gian Salvini and Kate Rogers in mixed doubles.
