Sea Kings solid in singles

CORONA DEL MAR -- Three singles players and one doubles team advanced for host Corona del Mar High at the Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis finals Friday.

Flora Lee, Michelle Atkins and Rachael Miller reached Monday’s singles semifinals. Lee had the toughest match of the day, a three-set win over University’s Ali Jones in the quarterfinals.

Atkins and Miller will meet in one semifinal, while Lee will face Tesoro’s McCall Jones in the other semifinal.

The Sea Kings’ duo of Haley and Miranda Young, seeded No. 2, also had an easy time of it, dropping two games in a pair of two-set sweeps. The sisters will face off against Laguna Beach’s Lorren Butterwick and Lauren Thigpen in the semifinals.

Corona del Mar’s other doubles teams lost in the quarterfinals, both to teams from Laguna Beach. Danielle Kaiden and Lindsay Zotovich lost to the Breakers’ Katie Ochwat and Kellie Ammerman, 7-5, 6-4. Lindsay Norman and Kelly McKitterick lost to the Breakers’ team of Lyndsay Kinstler and Claire Rietsch, 6-1, 6-0.

The semifinals and finals will be held Monday at CdM.

First round (singles): Lee (CdM) def. Gyswyt (CC), 6-1, 6-0; Atkins (CdM) def. Yang (Northwood), 6-1, 6-1; Miller (CdM) def. Robinson (LB), 6-0, 6-1.

Second round (singles): Lee (CdM) def. Jones (Uni), 5-7, 7-5, 6-2; Atkins (CdM) def. Polizois (LB), 6-0, 6-2; Miller (CDM) def. Fullmer (CC) 6-1, 6-0.

First round (doubles): Norman-McKitterick (CdM) def. Djen-Kang (University), 6-3, 7-5; Kaiden-Zotovich (CdM) def. Kurtz-Caille (Northwood), 6-1, 6-0; Young-Young (CDM) def. Hartman-Dugan (CC), 6-0, 6-0.

Second round (doubles): Kinstler-Rietsch (LB) def. Norman-McKiterrick (CdM), 6-1, 6-0; Ochwat-Ammerman (LB) def. Kaiden-Zotovich (CdM), 7-5, 6-4; Young-Young (CdM) def. Salgado-Leckness (Tesoro), 6-1, 6-1.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sea View League finals

ORANGE -- Newport Harbor High’s Kenny Rakestraw set a personal best time and placed second at Irvine Regional Park. The Sailors finished fifth in the team competition.

Rakestraw, just 12 days after having his appendix removed, ran the course in a time of 15:14 to finish second behind Woodbridge’s Conrad Wozniak.

Sophomores Murphy Hitchcock and Michael Punsel were the next fastest runners for Newport Harbor, finishing in 16:04 and 16:32, respectively. Wes Urtusuastegui ran the course in 16:35, and Alex Shaw finished in 16:45.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sea View League finals

ORANGE -- Whitney Blue took first place at Irvine Regional Park with a time of 16:33 -- the fastest time ever posted by a Newport Harbor girl on any course. Blue’s performance helped the Sailors finish first and advance to the CIF Southern Section preliminaries.

Following Blue was Desiree Alexander (ninth in 18:08), Taylor Bryson (10th in 18:10), Melissa Mead (11th in 18:14) and Erica Pearson (12th in 18:15).

GIRLS’ GOLF

CIF Southern Section Individual Finals

DIAMOND BAR -- Sage Hill’s Justine Chen shot a two-over-par 74 to finish eighth overall. Chen advances to the CIF/WSCGA Individual Tournament at the SCGA Golf Course in Temecula on Nov. 14.

Corona del Mar’s Katie McKitterick (84) and Estancia’s Lina You (92) and Bridget Gleason (94) did not advance.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Academy League Tournament

NEWPORT BEACH -- Two singles players and three doubles teams advanced for the Sage Hill School girls’ tennis team on Friday at the Balboa Bay Club.

Stephanie Langer and Ashley Adams advanced in singles after winning both of their matches. The doubles teams of Alle Hsu and Erica Spivack, Grace Graham and Jaclyn Smrecek, and Carissa Cummings and Salen Andrews also advanced.

Hsu and Spivack will face teammates Cummings and Andrews in the semifinals today at 1 p.m. Graham and Smrecek face a team from St. Margaret’s in the other semifinal.

The singles semifinals take place at 11 a.m.

Sea View League Tournament

IRVINE -- The Sailors’ second-seeded doubles team of Sasha Dunlap and Chrissy Schwartz lost to the top-seeded team of Natalie Druckor and Beckey Duesler from Foothill, 6-4, 6-3, in the doubles final Thursday at Woodbridge High.

Dunlap and Schwartz’s league runner-up finish qualified them for the CIF Southern Section individual tournament.

Newport Harbor’s fourth-seeded doubles team of Megan McKay and Alex McIntosh lost to Druckor and Duesler in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-3.

In singles, Newport Harbor senior Brittanny Sturgess lost to Emily Woo of Aliso Niguel, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Sea View League JV tournament

IRVINE -- Newport Harbor’s Allie Shea and Avalon Sigalos won the league junior varsity doubles title with a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the finals at Woodbridge High on Thursday.

Shea and Sigalos defeated Woodbridge’s No. 1 doubles team in the final.

In the singles final, the Sailors’ Marie Kapelke defeated teammate Christina Heimstedt, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, Friday at Newport.
