Volleyball players sign letters

Newport Harbor’s Carey and Sage Hill’s Dailey made it official by signing on the dotted line.Sage Hill School girls’ volleyball star Cat Dailey, who verbally committed to Cal in May, signed a National Letter of Intent with the Golden Bears on Wednesday morning, Lightning coach Dan Thomassen confirmed.

Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period for all sports except football, soccer, boys’ water polo and field hockey.

Dailey, a senior outside hitter for Sage Hill, is a two-time Daily Pilot Dream Team selection. Dailey is the leader in kills for Sage Hill, the No. 1 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoffs.

Dailey will join a Cal team that is currently 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-10 Conference under seventh-year head coach Rich Feller.

Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball standout Bryana Carey, who had verbally committed to play for William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., signed her National Letter of Intent Wednesday night.

Carey will join a program led by head coach Debbie Hill, who is the 24th all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I volleyball with 533 victories.

Carey, the lone senior starter on the Sailors’ roster, led Newport Harbor to the Sea View League title this season.

“It feels awesome,” Carey said. “My fellow seniors are all freaking out about what college they are going to. It’s nice not to have to worry about that anymore.”

Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball Coach Steve Conti said 6-foot-6 middle blocker Scott Slaughter was having his signing papers sent via Federal Express on Wednesday and was ready to sign a National Letter of Intent to play for UC Santa Barbara.

Newport Harbor High boys’ athletic director Eric Tweit said he expected senior water polo star Leah Robertson, who verbally committed to play water polo at the University of Michigan in September, to sign with the Wolverines. Tweit also said Newport girls’ soccer star Amy Klippert planned to continue her soccer career at Michigan.

Costa Mesa High boys’ athletic director and water polo coach Tim Postiff said water polo star Kyle Thorsness is considering his options. Thorsness has been looking at Long Beach State, Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.

The early signing period continues through Wednesday.
