Local teams win bowl games
Huntington Beach wins championships in Pop Warner.The Huntington Beach Green Chargers earned a spot in the Orange Empire Conference Orange Bowl championship game by defeating the Cypress Cyclones, 24-0, in Pop Warner Football Midget Division playoff semifinal action at La Habra.
Cypress, which finished the year 9-1, entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the division.
Justin DeValk and Michael Willis (the latter on a pass from Kyle Frame) scored touchdowns for the No. 4-seed Green Chargers, who improved to 9-1.
Jonny DeValk converted on each of his three extra point attempts.
Huntington will take on the Santa Margarita Titans at 5 p.m. Saturday at La Mirada Stadium for the Orange Bowl championship.

Pee Wee Division
Huntington 16, Santa Margarita 0
The Pee Wee Green Chargers broke away from a scoreless first half and went on to blank the Titans in the Orange Bowl title game Saturday at Trabuco Hills High. The Chargers defense turned in its top performance of the year as it limited the previously undefeated Titans to only a few first downs the entire game. The victory gave Huntington its second consecutive division Orange Bowl title.
The Green Chargers advance to participate in the Western Conference regional playoffs. They will take on the Escondido Storm Saturday.
Mighty Mite Division
La Mirada 34, Huntington 0
The Mighty Mite Chargers concluded their successful 2005 season with a loss to La Mirada in the Mighty Mite Bowl. Huntington ended its season with a 7-3 record.
“I’m very proud of what our team has accomplished with only 21 players, five with any experience and the rest playing their first year in tackle football,” Huntington coach Rick Hernandez said. “I’m proud to be with these kids.”
