OCC men win season debut

VENTURA -- Sophomore guard Reggie Brown tallied 18 points -- including 4 of 6 shooting from three-point land -- and had four rebounds and two steals in Orange Coast College’s 88-51 men’s basketball victory over Oxnard in the first round of the County Commerce Bank Classic at Ventura College.

Greg Okwudibonye had 10 points and four rebounds, while Lance Ortiz, Alvin Jackson, Cameron Wise, Matt Davis and Dan Rudisil each added eight points for the Pirates. Ortiz added eight assists, and Rodrick Ulmer led the team in rebounds with six.

Orange Coast (1-0) takes on Mount San Antonio College in the second round today at 5 p.m.

IRVINE -- Chris Peters’ goal with 40 seconds remaining lifted the Anteaters to an upset victory Thursday over the No. 3 team in the nation.

UCI (15-10, 5-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) scored the final three goals in the match. With UCLA leading, 7-5, Dreason Barry scored on a penalty shot with 4:43 remaining in the fourth period. Cole Bitter tied the score just over a minute later, setting the stage of Peters’ game-winner.

Tim Hutten led UCI with three goals.
