Mesa frosh are champs

ORANGE -- Running back Dakota Lambert scored two touchdowns to lead the Costa Mesa High freshman football team to a 23-0 victory against Orange for the Golden West League championship on Thursday.

The Mustangs (7-3, 6-0 in league) took a 14-0 lead at halftime and added to that in the second half, as the team shut out its first opponent all season.

Lambert burst 30 yards for his first touchdown and hauled in a 35-yard pass from quarterback Tony Johnson for his second score. Fullback Antwon Byrd scored the team’s other touchdown.

The defense was led by Chris Robinson, Jason Schroeder, Garrett Fraizier, Jeff Dye, Gerrvon Glinsey and Miles Wright.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 15,

Anaheim Canyon 3

CORONA DEL MAR -- Senior Rachael Miller and junior Michelle Atkins swept their singles sets to lead the fourth-seeded Sea Kings to a CIF Southern Section Division I victory over the Comanches on Thursday.

Miller and Atkins both swept without losing a game, while freshman Flora Lee won her two sets, 6-0, 6-0, playing as a substitute.

CdM (18-3) plays San Clemente in the second round at 2 p.m. Saturday with the site to be determined by a coin flip.

Canyon concluded the season 8-8.

Sage Hill 17,

Linfield Christian 1

NEWPORT BEACH -- The top-seeded Sage Hill girls’ tennis team defeated Linfield Christian Thursday, 17-1, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs. The Lightning dominated singles play, only losing two games in the match. Ashley Adams and Sarah Geocaris both swept their sets without losing a game.

Sage Hill (18-3) advances to play Chaffey on Saturday. The site will be determined by a coin flip, and announced by CIF later this morning.

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Sailors fell to Northwood on games in a CIF Southern Section Division I first-round matchup Thursday.

The doubles team of senior Megan McKay and sophomore Alex McIntosh swept its sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, while the duo of juniors Sasha Dunlap and Chrissy Schwartz swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

The Sailors conclude their season 15-3.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 20, Tesoro 7

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Harbor boys’ water polo team won in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs, 20-7. The Sailors took a 13-1 halftime lead over the Titans en route to the victory. Offensively, 10 different Sailors scored in the victory. Brett Auer led all scorers with four goals in the match.

Newport (23-5) will have a rematch with El Toro Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. The site will be decided by coin flip this morning.
