PLANNING COMMISSION

Here are some items the Planning Commission considered Nov. 3.

BAYSIDE DRIVE SUBDIVISION

The commission supported, 5-1, a proposal to replace a 64-unit apartment complex at the Newport Marina on Bayside Drive with a development of single-family homes. UGS Development Inc. plans to build 17 homes where the apartments now stand, and the city will require some improvements to the public’s access to the waterfront.

Commission chairman Michael Toerge voted against the proposal and Commissioner Larry Tucker recused himself from the vote.

WHAT IT MEANS

The City Council will consider the proposal.

SANTA BARBARA CONDOS

A plan to put a condo development on the site of the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel’s tennis courts won approval from the commission in a 6-0 vote, with Tucker recusing himself. Lennar Homes intends to build a project including 79 condos and an underground parking garage adjoining the Marriott, where residents could use the pool and spa.

WHAT IT MEANS

The condo project is a step closer to reality, but the required rezoning still needs approval from the City Council.

QUAIL STREET CONDOS

The commission postponed a decision on a condo project near John Wayne Airport until it discusses the future of the airport area as part of the general plan update. The 86-unit development, planned by Brookfield Homes, would be on a Quail Street lot that’s now an auto storage lot for Fletcher Jones Motorcars. The commission voted, 6-1, to delay discussion of the project, with commissioner Michael Henn casting the dissenting vote.

WHAT IT MEANS

The commission could take up the project again Dec. 8, or it could be delayed longer while the commission hashes out its vision for the airport area.
