Vanguard opens with easy win

college roundup for Sunday editionCOSTA MESA -- The Vanguard University women’s basketball team, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I, opened its season with a 118-29 nonconference win over William Jessup.

Nine different players scored for the Lions, who were led by sophomore Syracuse transfer Jessica Richter’s 28 points.

Rachel Besse was 10 for 10 from the field to finish with 20 points for the Lions, while Tiari Goold, a junior transfer from BYU, dished out 19 assists in her Vanguard debut.

Lindsey Rinke (19), Lacey Burns (16) and Kelly Schmidt (11) were also in double figures for the winners.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 74, Ventura 64

VENTURA -- The Pirates captured the County Commerce Bank Classic title by defeating the host team in the championship game Saturday night.

Reggie Brown hit several clutch shots in the second half to help lead the Pirates to victory.

Guard Lance Ortiz was named the tournament MVP.

Post player Matt Davis was an all-tournament selection for the Pirates (3-0).

Vanguard 71, William Jessup 54

COSTA MESA -- The Lions began their season with a 17-point win over the Warriors Saturday night. All five starters scoried in double figures.

Kevin Dalafu paced the Lions with 15 points. Tim Burnette posted a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Leon Rosborough added seven assists in the win.

The Lions (1-0) next game will be Friday at Pomona-Pitzer.

CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA West Regional

STANFORD -- The UC Irvine women finished ninth and the men’s team was 15th in the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford University Golf Course Saturday.

Senior Amber Steen finished 26th in 21 minutes, 13.4 seconds to pace the UCI women. Laura Olvera was 42nd in 21:33.8.

The women totaled 310 points. Stanford won the meet with 24 points.

Freshman Nick Mosey was UCI’s top men’s finisher (74th in 32:07.4).

Arizona won the men’s title.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 11, Cal Baptist 5 RIVERSIDE -- Senior Dreason Barry scored four goals to lead the No. 6-ranked Anteaters past unranked Cal Baptist in nonconference game Saturday.

Senior Nate White had three goals for the Anteaters (16-10), which received five saves from goalkeeper Matt Garcia.

Cal Baptist fell to 17-16.

WOMENS’ VOLLEYBALL

UC Riverside def. UC Irvine

RIVERSIDE -- The Anteaters fell to the Highlanders, 21-30, 30-26, 23-30, 30-32, 15-9, in a Big West Conference match Saturday.

Amanda Vazquez led UCI with 26 kills and five blocks. Lauren Kellerman struck 21 kills in defeat.

The Anteaters (9-18, 2-10 in conference) next play Friday night at home against Cal State Northridge.

The Anteaters fell Friday night to Cal State Fullerton, 30-27, 30-22, 28-30, 30-21, in a Big West Conference match.
