Vanguard ousted

RIVERSIDE -- The 2005 season came to an end for Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team after it lost to Cal Baptist, 30-26, 27-30, 30-25, 30-17, in the first round of the NAIA Region II playoffs on Tuesday night.

Cal Baptist was the No. 2 seed in the region and No. 3 in the nation, while Vanguard was the No. 7 regional seed.

After dropping the first game, the Lions rallied in the second game, going on a 12-4 run to win the second game. Jaclyn Lee had three of her team-high 16 kills during the run.

Vanguard stayed close in the third game, tying the score at 19-19 before Cal Baptist took the lead for good on a kill by Yudelka Bonilla and a block by Angela Willis.

Besides Lee’s 16 kills, Kim Wynn tallied 15 kills and 17 digs, and Michal Shortridge added 14 kills. Marissa Cothran had 48 assists for Vanguard, which finished the season 23-11.

Cal Baptist was led by conference Player of the Year Verania Willis, who had 27 kills and 14 digs. The Lancers advanced to this weekend’s semifinals.
