Marina wins field hockey title
In final, Vikings beat Newport Harbor, 3-1.The Marina High field hockey team claimed the 2005 Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Championship by defeating Newport Harbor, 3-1, at Westminster High.
Midfielders Mary Ann Watson and Heather Harvey scored for Marina, with Harvey posting both of her goals in the second half.
Marina led, 2-0, before the Sailors managed to get on the scoreboard.
In girls’ volleyball:
There will be a new CIF-Southern Section Division II-AA champion in 2005. That’s because defending champion Edison saw its bid for a repeat denied Saturday by visiting Mater Dei, which stormed back from a 2-0 deficit in games to pull out a grueling 19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-11 victory in quarterfinal play.
Earlier in the season, Edison had defeated Mater Dei.
Last November, the Chargers won their first CIF title in the sport by defeating the Monarchs at Cypress College.
Kari Pestolesi had 19 kills, 13 digs and four aces and Kelly Hyder had 15 kills to lead Edison.
In previous postseason play, Edison swept Cypress and Villa Park.
Huntington Beach opened the Division II-AA playoffs with a 26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 25-12 victory over host Troy and followed that win with a 25-17, 18-25, 17-25, 25-15, 15-7 come-from-behind triumph over visiting Moorpark. But the playoff run for the Oilers ended in Saturday’s quarterfinal round, where Huntington fell to Redondo Union, 16-25, 14-25, 25-22, 17-25.
In girls’ tennis:
In a first-round match in the CIF-SS Division II playoffs, Huntington held off Crescenta Valley, 10-8. The Oilers were strong in singles play, where No. 1 Stacy Kaufman won 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 and No. 2 Jennifer Heumann and No. 3 Monica Stupaczuk each won two of three.
Huntington was eliminated from postseason play Saturday by visiting Marlborough, 14-4.
In boys’ water polo:
Marina opened the Division II playoffs with a resounding 15-3 victory over Empire League champion Cypress.
The Vikings, the No. 3 team out of the Sunset League, advanced to play top-ranked Servite Tuesday.
