Huntington Dolphins go belly-up

Two local youth football teams fall in postseason play.The 2005 Jr. All-American Football season came to an end for the Huntington Beach Future League and Jr. Pee Wee Division teams Saturday following losses in postseason play.

Future League

Irvine 25, Huntington 20

In a bowl game that had several lead changes, Irvine scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Irvine took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but Huntington moved into the lead in the second quarter when running back Javier Sanchez scored a touchdown to make it 8-7.

That score stood at the half, but the Chargers again pulled into the lead, 13-8, in the third quarter. The Dolphins responded later in the quarter when Sanchez scored on another run to make it 14-13.

Sanchez rushed for his third and final touchdown in the fourth quarter to wipe out a 19-14 deficit and give Huntington its final lead at 20-19.

After Irvine had scored late to go up, 25-20, the Dolphins mounted one final drive, but the clock ran out.

Also making key contributions to the Dolphins’ cause was Jake Austin, Dylan Palmer, Dylan Stratton, C.J. Jackson, Sean Welsh, Trevor Blake, Anthony DeLaTorre, Drake Williamson, Nicky Favazza, Jake Armstrong, Drew Guerrero, Jackson McCleery and Evan Gray.

The Dolphins were coached by Jeff Mathews and assistants Matt Austin, Mike Blake and James Guglielmana.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Corona 32, Huntington 0

Huntington’s season came to an end at the hands of the Corona Panthers in a second-round playoff game.

The Orange Dolphins roster is composed of Alex Alagata, Cody Crujido, Skyler Dubar, Vincent Dugard, Justin Fallon, Jonathan Goodheart, Scheyden Herold, Trevor Jackson, Steele Mason, Zachary Mays, Justin McCollum, Austin Moffatt, Dane Perkins, Donald Rice, Bernardo Robles, Jerritt Rodenas, Anthony Rodriguez, Nicholas Rommerdahl, Ben Roth, Luke Sonne, Matthew Tavakoli, Damien Williamson, Chad Wood and Brandon Wooten.

The team was coached by Ed Rodenas and assistants Lui Alagata, Anthony McLawyer, Doug Perkins and Steve Rhodes.

In 2006, all Huntington Beach Jr. All-American teams will switch their nickname from the Dolphins to the Oilers.

The teams play their home games at Huntington Beach High.
