Track and field athlete Bo Taylor signed with UCLA, and swimmer Lexie Shue signed with the University of Notre Dame.

Wednesday was the final day of the early signing period for all sports except football, boys’ water polo, soccer and field hockey.

Taylor, who picked the Bruins over Cal and Arizona, said he chose UCLA because of its “history of great throwers.”

Last season, Taylor set a personal record with a toss of 59 feet, 5 inches in the shot put at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet. His personal best in the discus is 185-11.

Taylor said he thinks UCLA track Coach Art Venegas will make a major impact on his performance.

“I believe Coach Venegas is the top throwing coach in the country,” said Taylor.

Shue said she chose Notre Dame over Virginia, Rice and UCLA.

“Notre Dame has a commitment to winning, a dedicated team, and I felt I fit in with the rest of the team,” Shue said. “I just knew it was the right choice for me.”

Shue was a member of the Sea Kings’ 2004 CIF Southern Section Division II championship team in swimming.

During her high school career, Shue has set four school records at Corona del Mar. She set the school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle (4:56.37) and helped set the record in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relays. Her 500-yard freestyle school record is also the Pacific Coast League record.

The next signing period for high school athletes will begin Feb. 1, for football, men’s water polo, soccer and field hockey.
