Ortiz nets 39 in Pirates’ home opener

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College’s men’s basketball team moved to 4-0 with an 88-86 victory over Imperial Valley in its home opener Friday night.

Lance Ortiz led the way with 39 points and eight rebounds.

Greg Okwudibonye tallied 12 points and nine rebounds and Steve Cornett added six rebounds -- including five on the offensive boards.

Pomona-Pitzer 60

CLAREMONT -- Kevin Dalafu had a team-high 22 points as the Lions escaped with a victory on the road. Levi Seekins tallied 11 points and six rebounds and Horace Wormely added 11 points and four assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fresno State 93, UC Irvine 84

IRVINE -- Angie Ned had a team-high 17 points and Kelly Cochran added 14, but the Anteaters lost their season opener Friday night. Melissa Jacob added 13 points and six assists for UC Irvine (0-1).

Orange Coast 53, El Camino 41

COSTA MESA -- The Pirates jumped out to a 29-18 lead in the first half and never looked back. Laurie Denning led the way with 12 points and three assists and Jillian Ricks added nine points. Madison Parks had a team-high eight rebounds for OCC (4-1).

Orange Coast 9

Long Beach 6, Orange Coast 3

FRESNO -- Orange Coast lost Diablo Valley in sudden-death overtime in the preliminary round of the California Community College Water Polo Championships on Friday, then fell again to Long Beach.

Against Diablo Valley, Jeanette DeMeneces led the way with four goals, Laura DeMeneces tallied three goals and Sarah Mutt added two goals. The Pirates let a 9-7 overtime lead slip away.

Cal State Northridge

IRVINE -- The Anteaters (18-10, 3-10 in the Big West) won in a sweep, 30-18, 30-23, 30-18. Lauren Kellerman led the way with 16 kills and Whitney Pavlik had 12 kills. Christa Conom tallied 42 assists for UC Irvine.
