Two area duos move forward in CIF tennis
Two area doubles teams -- Corona del Mar High’s Haley and Miranda Young and Newport Harbor’s Sasha Dunlap and Chrissy Schwartz -- each won three matches in CIF Southern Section girls’ tennis sectionals on Saturday.
Both teams advanced to the round of 16 on Dec. 1 at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Dunlap and Schwartz played their matches at the Peninsula Racquet Club. All other area teams played at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
In their third round match, Dunlap and Schwartz defeated Mater Dei’s Andrea Zamucen and Kelli Kawabe, 6-2, 6-4, to improve their season record to 39-7.
The Youngs defeated Long Beach Wilson’s Jovenna Sangria and Nicole Tigas, 7-5, 6-3, in their third-round match. They rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second set against Sangria and Tigas. The sisters lost one game in their first two matches.
Sage Hill’s doubles team of Allie Hsu and Erica Spivack won two matches before falling to Laguna Beach’s Claire Reitsch and Lyndsay Kintsler, 6-1, 6-0. The Lightning’s other team, Carissa Cummings and Salen Andrews fell to Sangria and Tigas, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round.
CdM’s Rachel Miller won two matches in singles, but lost, 6-1, 6-0, to Troy’s Cosmina Ciobanu in the third round.
Sage Hill’s Stephanie Langer eliminated Estancia’s Ellie Edles, 7-6, 7-6, in her first round match, but fell to Dana Hills’ Brooke Pletcher, 6-0, 6-3.
